Nancy Ellen Tate Hilal, 73, of Charlotte, was called home to glory Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at CMC Main of Charlotte, with her husband, Abdullah, and daughter, Kimberly, by her side.
Nancy was born to the late George Edward Tate and Lydia Caldwell Tate, Nov. 25, 1948, in Morganton.
Nancy graduated from Morganton High School in 1967. She was active in the science club, band and basketball, all while remaining on the honor roll. Nancy relocated to Charlotte in 1971 as a medical transcriptionist at the independence medical center for several years. She then changed her profession and joined the Boy Scouts of America where she worked as a program coordinator for some of the BSA programs. It would be several years later that she would meet her husband, Abdullah Hilal. They thoroughly enjoyed their favorite past time of traveling together and the likened idea of being foodie experts by locating the latest new restaurants.
She enjoyed reading, sewing and cooking. Nothing could keep her from making sure kitchen had the best cookware and latest kitchen gadget while making her famous comment "it's good, but not good as mine."
Nancy loved being around her family, it made her happy and put the deepest joy in her heart. She always looked forward to seeing everybody. It was always a moment of gladness that would last for weeks.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Tate; and sister, Sharon Tate.
She leaves to mourn her devoted husband of 24 years, Abdullah Hilal; one loving daughter, Kimberly Howell; brothers, Harry Tate (Brenda), George "Barron" Tate, and Louis Tate (Linda); nephews, Brian Tate, Ronald Tate, Michael Tate (Sarah), Reginald Tate (Leah) and Andre Tate (Roshanda); nieces, Cassandra Carr Roberson (Corey) and Shari Tate; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Nancy Ellen Hilal will be held Friday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to service. The Rev. James Hunt will officiate. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park in Morganton. Services will be livestreamed at Kirksey Funeral Home and Cremation Service Facebook page. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing will be required.

As I reflect on years gone by, there are so many great memories and good times of Nancy from our youth that I will cherish always. To Kim, Harry Edward, Barron, Louis and all of the Tate/Hilal family, please know that my heartfelt prayers and condolences are being sent your way in this season of your lives. I am so sorry that I can´t be with you but know that the touch on your shoulder that you feel is me sending my support and love to you from New York. But also know that the hug that you feel is God wrapping His arms of comfort around you to give you peace during this time. May His Grace and Mercy be with each of you and the loving memories of your mother and sister remain firmly etched in your hearts always.
