Ferdinand von Meyer Obituary

Ferdinand Paul von Meyer, Jr., age 94, of Eugene, OR, formerly of Lorain, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022, in Eugene, OR.Ferdinand will fondly be remembered as the “Funny Money Man,” and would be seen around Lorain County at any given time. He was born on December 9, 1927, in Detroit, MI. He moved to Lorain in 1958 where he lived until 10 years ago, moving to Eugene, OR to be closer to his daughter. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 7, 1946, and was Honorably Discharged on December 12, 1947, he was recalled to active duty at the beginning of the Korean War in November of 1950 and was Honorably Discharged on December 12, 1952. After his discharge from the military, he attended Wayne State college where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Lorain where he taught Sunday school for over 20 years. Ferd was also a Free Mason.Ferdinand enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, playing games, especially cards, and bird watching. He always looked forward to gatherings and festivities and in general, loved to just talk to people. Amongst all of these favorite pastimes, he also participated in the Lorain Community Hospital Follies, He was proud to be a multi gallon blood donor.Over his lifetime, he worked for the City of Detroit, then when he moved to Lorain, he worked for Ford Motor Co., eventually ending his careers working for Allstate Insurance Company as a sales agent. Through the years as an insurance agent, he won numerous awards for his outstanding insurance sales.He is survived by his sister, Phillis Ptashnik, of Detroit Michigan; daughter, Barbara Minkler, of Eugene, OR; son, David N. von Meyer, of Elyria, OH; grandchildren; Kenza Minkler, Mandy Vanatta, Nicole Sharp, David P. von Meyer, Stephen von Meyer, Patrick von Meyer, Tiffany von Meyer, and Douglas von Meyer great-grandchildren, Madison Vanatta, Brody Vanatta, Nicholas Sharp, Joseph Sharp, and Sophia Sharp.He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Mary (nee Burton) von Meyer, 2nd wife, Sylvia (nee Culig) von Meyer, parents; Ferdinand Paul, Sr. and Luella (nee Hovey) von Meyer, and his brother, Tom von Meyer.The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 28, 2022, from 3-7 pm in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. His funeral service will be on Friday, at 12:00 pm, also in the funeral center. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst, where full military honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
