Helen Ujvari

1923 - 2016

Helen Ujvari (nee Garab), age 93 and a former resident of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at Marymount Hospital, Garfield Heights, after a sudden illness.
Helen was born in Hungary, January 2, 1923, and emigrated to the United States with her family in 1956, first residing in Lorain and then moving to Baumhart Road where she and her husband maintained a farm.
Helen was employed as a cafeteria aid at the former Howard Johnson's on the Ohio Turnpike at the Middle Ridge Plaza from 1976-1984. Throughout her life Helen enjoyed crocheting and dancing, and in her later years she liked to gamble at casino's. Most of all, Helen loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most recently, Helen resided in Lakewood, living close to her granddaughter Ava Rabold, who was her beloved caregiver.
While residing in Lorain County, Helen was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079, Elyria, and the American Hungarian Citizens Club of Lorain. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst.
Surviving is her son, Joseph "Joby" A. Ujvari of Arizona; daughter, Elizabeth M. Ujvari of Florida; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ujvari (1983); son, Theodore "Ted" R. Ujvari (2011); granddaughter, Elizabeth T. Davala (1989); sisters, Anna Elo and Rose Toego; and her brothers, Steve Garab, Frank Garab, Joseph Garab, Florian Garab, and Ignatius Garab.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. Closing prayers will be at noon on Wednesday at the funeral home followed by 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Rev. John Wessel will officiate.
Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
