ELYRIA - John George Matesic, age 91, of Elyria passed away Sunday, August 19, 2012 at St. John Westshore Medical Center.
He was born on May 8, 1921 in Lorain, Ohio to Stephen and Luba Matesic. He was a graduate of Lorain High School. John was employed at US Steel for 41 years loading pipe in the Warehouse Shipping Department.
John was inducted in the U.S. Army on November 7, 1942 serving his country in World War II fighting 4oth. Combat Engineers in Africa and Europe and received 7 Battle Stars. He was Honorably Discharged on November 20, 1945.
He loved gardening, traveling, hunting, fishing and playing cards.
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Maribeth) Matesic, of Elyria; daughters, Lynne (Tom) Sexstella, of Vermilion, Donna (Dennis) Green, of Amherst, Jeannie (Patrick) Nolan, of Amherst and Terri (Rich) Murray, Elyria; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his 15 year companion, Helen Klan; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Stella K. Matesic; grandchildren, Jason Matesic and Jake Nolan; parents, Stephen and Luba Matesic; brothers, Mike, Steve and Bob; sisters, Anna, Barbara, Mary and Kate.
The Matesic family will receive family and friends on Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing Prayers will be said at 10:30 a.m. following the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria. Rev. Donald H. Dunson will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
