Katherine Legard Obituary


ELYRIA - Katherine E. "Kat" (nee Shumate) Legard, 68, of Elyria, transitioned into Heaven on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, following a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Elyria, a graduate of Midview High School class of 1966 and she attended Lorain County Community College, majoring in accounting. She was employed with the City of Elyria in the Elyria Public Utilities Department as a billing Supervisor with 20 plus years of services and she also worked for Moen Corporation for 10 plus years.
She was a member of Jones Chapel AME Church of Elyria, where she served on the Usher Board and Kitchen Committee, member of the order of Eastern Star Sidonia Chapter #69 of Elyria of Al Lalim Court #205 Elyria, a member of Floyd C. Churchwell #8 of Elyria and the Golden, where she served as past matron, past commandress Circle #19 of Cleveland. She enjoyed bowling, card games, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 26 years, James Legard of Elyria; daughters, Lisa (Wesley) Nixon and Traci Nelson, both of Lorain; sons, Melvin (Angee) Nelson of Walton Hills, Ohio and James Legard, Jr. of Lorain; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Karen "Jean" (Michael) Taylor of Elyria and aunt, Barbara Jean Wiggins of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford F. and Ellen L. Shumate and brothers, Richard "Buba" Shumate and Leroy Shumate.
Friends may call Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 10 A.M. until time of service at 11 A.M., with the Order of Eastern Star Sidonia Chapter #69 service at 9 A.M., in the Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria. The Reverend Dixie Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery.
