Robert Stilgenbauer Obituary

Robert E. Stilgenbauer, DDS, 73, died peacefully on January 4, 2018 after a ten year battle with advanced prostate cancer.
A beloved husband and father, he was born August, 9, 1944 in Lorain. He graduated Lorain High School, Ohio University, and Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, in addition to serving in the U.S. Navy.
He practiced dentistry in Lorain for 30 years, and was a past president of the Lorain County Dental Society.
He was an active member of First Congregational Church, Lorain.
His many interests included: gardening (Firelands Garden Club and Schoepfle Arboretum); music; woodworking; basket weaving; and blacksmithing (Western Reserve Artist Blacksmith Assoc.) He helped design the blacksmith shop at the Amherst Historical Society, where there is a self-portrait forged into one of the metal struts. He enjoyed mentoring Boy Scouts for their metalworking badge at their Jamborees. And he was always game to fabricate anything his wife or daughter could think up.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane (Bittner) Stilgenbauer; daughter, Sarah E. Stilgenbauer; sister, Cheryl (Don) Strehle; nieces and nephews; and Mother-in-Law, Dorothy Daniels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert J. and Eloise (Kilgore) Stilgenbauer; Father-in-Law, Henry Daniels; and Brother-in-Law,Tom Bittner.
Friends will be received at 10 am until time of service at 11 am, Saturday, January 20th at Community Congregational Church, 379 S. Main St., Amherst, OH, followed by a luncheon.
Interment will be later this spring at Riverside Cemetery, Berlin Hts.
Memorial donations can be made in his honor to: Amherst Historical Society; Lorain Palace Theater (Organ Fund); Hospice of the Western Reserve (Special Care Fund); and Mercy New Life Hospice.
We are grateful for the compassionate care provided to him and his family from the hospices and the staff of Louis B. Stokes VA Medical Center and from our home health aides, Christa and Loretta.
The Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, assisted with the arrangements.

Jane and Sarah, my deepest condolences to both of you. Dr. Stilgenbauer was by far my favorite dentist and friend when our paths crossed at the Congregational Church. He contributed much and will be missed.
