It took me many months to organize my thoughts after hearing such tragic news. I unfortunately missed his showing, as I was only informed by a mutual acquaintance after the fact.
Tyran and I go way back. Both honors students at LHS. Both selected for the PSEO program. He was incredibly smart, but also humble. We would often help each other in our studies, and would often work together on projects.
We used to carpool to school together with my Grandpa and our friend Amanda. My Grandpa and I would prepare breakfast sandwiches for the morning ride on most days.
Tyran was a common guest at our table, and we'd occasionally send him off with granola bars and other convenient food items. Over years we all became very good friends.
We would walk the west side, bumping into mutual friends and acquaintances who'd round us up for basketball - though I could never keep up with Tyran on the court. Dude was just too fast.
Playing retro video-games and talking about the world was more our spin when we would hang out.
He and I used to keep shared notebooks in which we would draw comical things and write down ideas, usually social or political in nature.
Street smart as Tyran could be, he was also deeply thoughtful and philosophical. His will to discretely learn as much as he could about the world was an admirable and contagious trait, and his whacky street humor was equal parts hilarious and educational.
Tyran's influence in my youth helped me to confront and replace many negative social ideas that I didn't even realize I had until Tyran himself educated me.
When I moved to Wisconsin to work for three years, Tyran was among those "old circle" faces that I would miss every day.
I had been trying to catch up with him upon moving back to Ohio, but our schedules unfortunately never meshed. While newer interactions would be in passing, they would always be positive.
When I heard about what happened - I ran out of the house, jumped into my car and pulled off to a spot where I could break down without startling my loved ones.
I was gripped a storm of pure and unrelenting grief and rage. The kind of needle-in-heart grief that one feels upon losing a friend too early, and an unforgiving rage against a world that would take my old friend away.
To Tyran's family I say that I am deeply sorry, and I hope you are all doing as well as you can.
And to Tyran himself I say thank you for teaching me to be a better person. Thank you for teaching me hidden histories. Thank you for being a dear friend. I will remember you always, and future generations will learn the lessons you shared.
Rest easy, old friend.
