Vicki Marty Obituary

Vicki E. Marty (nee Szokan) of Amherst/Lorain passed through on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Westlake Healthcare Center following a short illness.
Vicki was born December 18, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio, where she spent the early part of her life until graduation from Solon High School in 1966. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ashland College, graduating in 1970. She moved to the Lorain/Amherst area in 1970 where she started a family and raised her two children.
In the mid-1970s she began a career working for Lorain County as a grant writer for various job-training programs such as CETA, JPTA & ETA. Following this, she became a substitute teacher for Lorain City Schools until 2010.
Vicki was a passionate Browns fan and held season tickets in the "dawg pound" for many years. She enjoyed politics, reading, crossword puzzles, music and going to concerts. Vicki also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor and took great pleasure in making people laugh.
She is survived by her children, Kiki (Jim) Bullington of Denver and Brent (April) Marty of Mebane, North Carolina, two grandchildren, Evan and Mia, as well as her sister, Joyce P. McCabe, of Sheffield Lake.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen (nee Balint) Szokan, and her father, Victor Szokan.
Vicki wished for her body to be a gift of anatomy to Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at UCC Congregational Church, 379 South Main Street, Amherst, on Friday, February 11, 2011, from 4:30 - 6:45, with a memorial service immediately following at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, 3601 South Green Road, Suite 100, Cleveland, OH 44122 (http://www.dagc.org/donate.asp), or to St. John Westshore Medical Center, Attn: Michelle Debelak, 29000 Center Ridge Road, Westlake, Ohio 44145 (http://www.sjws.net/about/gift-giving/donations.htm).

I worked with Vicki off and on from in the 1970s (CETA days) to last couple of years. She had an outstanding mind and was ALWAYS cheerful to see someone she knew again. I will truly miss seeing her and chit-chatting for awhile. She was a VERY Good Lady! Rest in Peace Vicky. Mary Butler, Elyria
