Charles Bowin Obituary

Charles Arthur Bowin, 90, of Scammon, Kansas, died at 5:45 am, Monday, April 13, 2015 at Medicalodge in Columbus.
Charles was born March 2, 1925 in Roseland the son of Elmer and May (Welcher) Bowin. He was the sixth of nine children. He attended local schools in West Mineral, KS. He later attended Pittsburg Teacher's College training for Mechanics.
Charles was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S Navy on the U.S.S. LST 801 from June 7, 1944 to June 2, 1946. On December 26, 1947 he married Betty Mae Hodgson in Columbus, Kansas. They made their home in Monte Carlo (Scammon). She preceded him in death on June 7, 1993.
Charles was a traditional blue-collar American. He believed in God and his country and supported his family of six children by the sweat of his brow. He was a blacksmith in his father's shop, a welder, a mechanic and a farmer. Charles had a milk route for many years for Pet Milk, was a Cherokee County Sheriffs' Deputy and a guard for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant upon his retirement. He was the pride of the neighborhood with his huge garden. He was also an excellent dog trainer. Charles was also a lifetime member of the VFW 1372 Columbus, KS.
He is survived by four daughters, Connie Courtney and husband Bill of Carthage, MO, Marsha Hudson and husband Jerry of Columbus, KS, Sandy Daniels and husband Stan of Scammon, KS, Vickie Coy and husband Kenny of Columbus, KS, and two sons, David Bowin and wife Robyn of Scammon, KS and Rick and his wife Sherry of McCune, KS; one brother, Donald Albert Bowin of Park Hill, OK; one sister, Beatrice Rippel of Weir, KS; 15 grandchildren Curt Courtney, Heather Courtney Kinzey, Kevin Adams, Charlotte Daniels Johnson, Wayne Daniels, Candy Daniels Hemphill, Jared Bowin, Shantel Bowin Oplotnik, Karrah Coy Smith, Kimberly Coy Foster, Matt Bowin, Seth Bowin and Aaron Bowin; 31 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grand children and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ephner, Everett, Thomas and Reneford Bowin; one sister, Margaret Huff; two grand daughters, Krystal Coy Parsons and Autumn Courtney Law; and great-grandchildren Kevin Daniel Parsons, Samual Cody Parsons and Emersyn Rai Smith.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 17, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir with Elder Larry Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday.
