John Schaub Obituary

John J. Schaub
Arcadia - John J. Schaub, Sr.,72, of Arcadia, Kansas died at 11:35 A.M. Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg, Kansas.
Mr. Schaub was born January 2, 1949 at Pittsburg, Kansas the son of Charles (Bud) and Virginia Gilday Schaub. John worked as a heavy equipment operator for Bill's Coal Company and Clemens Coal Company and always joked about closing them down. He also worked for Heck & Wicker Inc. and ended his career as an operator by retiring from the Crawford County Road and Bridge. His family will be lost without him telling us what we need to be doing and how we need to do it, but it was only because he cared about us so much. He made us crazy sometimes, but it was only because he loved his family so much that he was so expressive. His life centered around his three children. They added to his joy with six grandsons. Six boys, can you imagine…he had his hands and heart full with those boys. John made sure to pass on his love of the outdoors, hunting, and shooting to his boys. He made sure they all had plenty of ammo and space to hunt, fish, and run amuck, but all nonsense stopped for Jayhawk basketball, Notre Dame football, or NASCAR on television. He married Deborah Youvan on July 14, 1978 at Miami, Oklahoma. She survives at the home. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma and was active in local politics serving as Democratic Precinct Committeeman and a Lincoln Township Trustee. Survivors include his wife Deborah of the home, three children, Jeana (Desi) Kotzman, Joe (Kelly) Schaub, and Joane (Scott) Franklin, and six grandchildren, Drake and Drew Kotzman, Jaxen & Jase Schaub, Dylan Toal, and Cooper Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles (Bud) and Virginia Schaub.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 A.M. Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, Kansas with Father Floyd McKinney as the celebrant. Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. Rosary will be said at 6 P.M. Tuesday at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma where the family will receive friends until 7 P.M. following the rosary. A Celebration of Life will follow the mass on Wednesday at the family home. Face mask and social distancing will be required. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.

It was 1990 I was a kid just out of high school who couldn’t wait to work in the coal mine. John was operating a D10 on the evening shift for Clemons coal, I drove down in the pit and walked up beside that big tractor as he stopped and stepped out on the track. How about a ride on that thing? John replied “ I’ll do better than that young man, get up here you can run it!” Looking back I was so lucky to work with guys like him when I was a young man.

Attended 3 years of high school at Arcadia High School with John and the school unification rule sent us to different high schools our senior year. Some contact when we attended Junior College at Ft. Scott.
I remember we rode horses and did typical things for young guys. Lots of great memories from Arcadia. He had great parents. He was a good guy! We had lots of fun!
May God's grace and mercy continue to his entire family.
I left Kansas in January of 1989 for Illinois and don't get back very often.
Blessings to all the family.
