Verna Varsolona Obituary
Mrs. Varsolona was born January 15, 1922 at Girard, Kansas the daughter of Ira Elmer and Inez Hampton Parsons.
Verna Lee was a homemaker and co-owner of Varsolona Liquor Store for 25 years.
She was raised in Girard and graduated from Girard High School in 1939.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed bingo, crosswords, playing keyboard and crochet, and loved spending time with family and friends.
During World War II she worked at Sheffield Steel in Kansas City, Missouri and also at Crystal Plant grinding crystals for walkie talkies that the soldiers used in the field to communicate.
She married John "Leitz" Varsolona on March 9, 1939 at Lamar, Missouri. Mr. Varsolona preceded her in death on November 9, 2006.
She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, charter member and past president of the Lon Helm Post No. 182 American Legion Auxiliary, past president of the Eagles Auxiliary, and served six years as trustee of Washington Township.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy (Lawrence) Smerchek of Arma, a son, John L. (Maurene) Varsolona of Frontenac, three grandchildren, Laurie (Troy) Graham, Mandy (Shannon) Ossana, and Ryan (Annie) Varsolona, and seven great grandchildren, Trevor and Lily Graham, Curtis and Katelyn Ossana, Ace, Jaxon, and Bella Varsolona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Marjorie Reed, and two brothers, Truman and John Parsons.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma with Father Floyd McKinney as the celebrant.
Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m. after the rosary.
The family suggests memorials to the St. Ann's Altar Society.
Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.

Vars, Maurene and family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your sweet Mother. I only met her recently at Oak View but visited with her several times. She was so proud of her family!!
You were so blessed to still have her all these years! Our prayers are with you and may her soul now rest in eternal peace.
