MOUNT GILEAD - Elmer E. "Gene" Varner, age 80, of Mount Gilead, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 23, 2023, at Woodside Village Care Center.
On March 16, 1943, Gene was born in Mansfield, Ohio, a son of the late Susie (Swihart) Varner.
Gene left school at the age of 16 to begin working. He was an extremely hard-working man, spending most of his time in the oil fields. For many years, he owned and operated Varner Well Service.
A man of faith, Gene had been a member of the North Bend Church of the Brethren in Danville, where he sang in the choir.
Gene enjoyed going to tractor pulls, watching old westerns and cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns. He loved being with his family and meeting up with friends at Paul Revere's Restaurant in Lexington for breakfast.
Left to cherish Gene's memory are three children: Tammy (Bob) Morningstar of Mount Vernon, Bob (Missy) Varner of Mount Gilead, Lisa Watson of Mount Gilead; six grandchildren: Chad Varner, Erik Morningstar, Brandon (My) Morningstar, Levi (Ashley) Varner, Emily Varner, Austin Watson; six great grandchildren; former wife, Karen Varner; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; and his favorite canine companion, Cujo.
