MOUNT GILEAD - Ruth Evelyn (Lutz) Logan, best known as "Rootie", age 103, of Mount Gilead, died peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Bennington Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Marengo.
Ruth was born on July 21, 1921, in Bucyrus, Ohio, the oldest of three children of the late Ervin S. and Bessie Mae (Ruth) Lutz. She graduated from Bucyrus High School, attended Capital University, and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Home Economics in 1943. She taught one year at Ashland High School; worked in the testing lab at Owens Corning Fiberglass in Newark, Ohio, as World War II ended; and for a short time, worked at Battelle Research Institute in Columbus.
Ruth had met Jack E. Logan in a class at Ohio State before Jack's service in World War II in the US Army Air Corps as a pilot and flight instructor. After his honorable discharge, Jack and Ruth were married on June 14,1946, and moved to his family farm near Mount Gilead, where they spent the rest of their lives. They were the parents of four children: Jeffrey, Jane, Ted, and Kent. When her youngest reached school-age, Ruth returned to teaching and taught kindergarten and first grade from 1964 to 1984 in the Mount Gilead Village School District. For years, she organized field trips for 1st graders to the farm to see potato harvesting and allowed them to take home huge potatoes for dinner. After retirement, she stayed involved with the schools as a reading volunteer.
Ruth, alto, and Jack, tenor, enjoyed singing with the Marion Madrigal Singers for over 25 years, performing throughout central Ohio in costumes, which she had sewn. They loved great music (Ruth especially opera) and theater, and attended countless performances of their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law.
Ruth was a 4-H Club advisor from 1959 to 1967, served on the Mount Gilead Public Library Board for 15 years, and was a Friend of HopeLine, Inc, a crisis intervention hotline serving Delaware and Morrow Counties. She sang in the church choir for over 60 years and was active in Trinity United Methodist Church, serving as church historian in her later years, and sewing diligently for others until just a few months before she died.
She was very active with the American Red Cross of North Central Ohio from 1984 to 2020, serving as Board Secretary and as Blood Drive Coordinator for her church. She regularly donated food for the blood donors and made sure the canteen was staffed. In 1995, she received the Clara Barton Award for her service. She co-chaired a huge signature Quilt Project, their largest single fund-raiser project in recent years; and in 2015 was honored with the Karen Fishburn Award for exceptional service and leadership.
The culmination of Ruth's community service and philanthropic efforts led the Village of Mount Gilead to bestow on her the Tucker Award in 2023, which is given to individuals who care about people and strive to make Mount Gilead a better place to live through volunteer, professional and business activities and projects.
She will be missed by her surviving children: Jane (Donald) Schriver of Westerville, Ted (Deborah) Logan of Mount Gilead, and Kent (Deborah) Logan of Vandalia, OH; seven grandchildren: Brian (Gina) Schriver, John (Emily) Schriver, Brett (Natalie) Logan, Jeanette Logan (Daniel Martin), Brittany (Jacob) Wells, Alison Logan (Chris Cox), and Mark (Hannah) Logan; 11 beloved great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Debra K. Logan of Delaware; sister, Cynthia Buckland of Findlay; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Including her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack Logan, on August 9, 2009; son, Jeffrey A. Logan; and brother and sister-in-law: Donald and Beverly Lutz.

Ruth was so sweet to me as a teen wanting to enter the education field. She allowed me to help in her classroom and observe her talent as a teacher. I always thought of her as the nicest person and perfect for teaching little ones.
