It is difficult to say goodbye to one who has had such a strong influence in my life, but I was so honored to do so just a week before Fred's death. I will never forget all the skills and life lessons that he taught me as a part of the SLC, as my boss, mentor and friend. You will be missed dear Fred. Your "Gone Fishing" sign is now hung out eternally!

By the tone of the listings from others I know Fred will be missed! My time spent with Fred during the formulation of The Student Loan Corporation (SLC) for Citibank was truly memorable. Being new to the management ranks and going through what seemed to be a gauntlet of interviews in Rochester facility for a management position on the West Coast. I met with everyone who considered me for the open position. At the heart of the day when I got to Fred for the interview he immediately placed me at ease. “Take off your jacket, sit down and relax. You already have my vote.” were his words that I remember. For the next hour I was treated to enjoyable dialogue from a man who was on the top of his game. I true leader, mentor and friend. It is true and Kathy Cannon said it best “Fred changed lives”
Heaven
Now that I'm in Heaven, Lord
and life is just a dream
I don't want to hang around
eating strawberries and cream.
I'm really quite an active child
and I don't need to rest
I'll just play and do the things
You know I like the best.
I'll play ball in Heaven, Lord
With my halo on my head
I'll run around the playing field
or use my wings instead.
I'll pick the players on my team
and when we win the game
I'll make the Heaven's Hall of Fame
Everyone will know my name.
I'll fish the streams and rivers, Lord
and lure big fish my way.
You know I'll put them back again
to catch another day.
I'll sail the seas and see the lands
the mountains and the plains
I'll fly the skies with open eyes
above the clouds and rain.
I'll even practice all the things
an angel has to do
but family know my favorite thing
is watching over you.
Peace

Fred and I were competitors, collaborators, business partners and friends. Few people realize that without Fred many of the innovations in the student loan industry would have never come into existance. His love for his family always came first (as he would often share these feelings) but his contributions to an industry that provided funding for the education of countless students will always be remembered. Fred changed lives - his friends, his co-workers, his competitors, and students everywhere. Many blessings.

I'm proud to remember Fred as first my boss, then my mentor, and finally a friend. He was a significant influence in my life and I quote him almost daily. I also have enough Fred stories to tell for the rest of my life. Fred freely offered knowledge, encouragement, and laughter, and the impact he made on my career contributed greatly to the life my family and I enjoy today. Working with him was exciting, but also fun. Mary, thank you for sharing this remarkable man with the dozens of us who benefited from knowing him.

Dear Mary and Family,
Dee Loesch Andrae forwarded us the email . . . we were so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear husband--so many accomplishments in his lifetime, of which you can be so proud to be have been a part. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mary. May your memories bring you comfort during this most difficult time.
We spent some time with Gretchen and John Brugger last March 2009 in Bonita Springs--you have retired to such a beautiful area. We will be visiting my sister Mary Ann and Bruce Junius in Naples sometime this winter/spring when we visit our daughter in Miami. So, maybe we can get together for lunch or dinner for a visit.
Blessings always to you.

Dear Mary and family. My thoughts are with you during this very challenging time. I consider myself very fortunate to have known and worked with Fred for the many years we were at Citibank Student Loans. His dedication to his job, family, and living life to the fullest was very refreshing. Many good times and laughs were shared by all he worked with. Fred's 'firm, fair, and consistent' attitude has been instilled in many aspects of my life. Thank you Fred....you truly are a legend and are missed. Cast on......

I learned more from Fred in 2 years working for him than I ever could have learned at a top business school. Fred's unique ability to bring clarity from unrelated experiences was a true gift. I have always appreciated everything that I learned from you, and will treasure the memories. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Given the chance to work for Fred, I jumped at it and was blessed by having had the experience. Getting to spend time with Mary was the "icing on the cake." May God grant him safe landings and calm, clear waters.

Fred, you were one heck of a very fine man. You were also one Hell of a pilot. I flew with you a few times as a crew chief in the NY Army Guard. You have made a full stop landing now. You will be flying with angles and eagles from now. Fly high Fred....

My prayers and condolences are with Mary and Fred's family. Fred was such an excellent leader and I learned much about managing from him. What an honor it was to work with someone who loved his country, his family, and his work with such zeal. We had a great team at Citibank Student Loans thanks to Fred's leadership. I'm sure we all have memories that we treasure.
You are in my prayers....

I would not be where I am today if it was not for Fred. Fred was a fantastic boss, mentor, and friend. I value and appreciate all of his life experiences and how they related to what we do. His insight, and perspective were unmatched. I was priveledged to work and travel with Fred for many years. I will always treasure the long talks, advice, personal reflection, and most of all, Fred's ability to tell a GREAT "story". Thanks for the memories!

I enoyed my years working for Fred at PNC - learning from his years of experience and hearing his stories- times that will not be forgotten. My husband enjoyed time having a drink, a cigar and talks with Fred - we have missed that these past few years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and the family.

Not only did Fred lend his unconditional support to the park, he always added that undercover sense of humor of his that reminded us to laugh.
