The daughter of James and Barbara Kemp, she was born in Carthage on April 16, 1954. She lived a fulfilling life in service to others, and was internationally known as an expert in suicide prevention for veterans. Janet grew up in Carthage and graduated from Carthage Central School in 1972. She attended SUNY Plattsburgh and received a bachelor of science in nursing degree in 1976. She began her career with a position at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. From there, she moved to Denver, Colo., where she continued working as a nurse while attending the University of Colorado Denver, earning a master of science, nursing, degree in 1979. She returned to the University of Colorado Denver in 2000, earning a doctorate of philosophy, nursing, degree in 2004 for her dissertation "Women Deployed: Pattern Profiles of Women Who Served During the Persian Gulf War." She was a recipient of the University of Colorado Chancellor's Teaching Recognition Award and was a State of Colorado Nursing Nightingale Award finalist. In 1986, she began working for the Veterans Administration. She eventually began to research suicide prevention, becoming an expert on the topic. She served as National Mental Health Program Director for Suicide Prevention and Community Engagement from 2007 until 2014 and then as Associate Director and Chief of Education, Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention until her retirement in 2016. Major honors include the VA Secretary's Exceptional Service Award in 2007 and the Under Secretary of Health's Excellent Service Award in 2014. Dr. Kemp received the prestigious Service to America Medal, naming her 2009 Federal Employee of the Year, for establishing a national suicide prevention hotline for military members, veterans and their families. The hotline has received over three million calls since it went live in 2007, initiating the dispatch of emergency services to callers in imminent suicidal crisis tens of thousands of times. She served on a variety of military taskforces for suicide prevention, was a sought-after speaker on the topic of suicide prevention and held an adjunct appointment at the University of Rochester. Janet is survived by a family and many friends who loved her very much and were proud of her accomplishments. These include her spouse of many years, Rhonda Kreft; and her sister Pamela Kemp Shepherd, Potsdam. She also had a nephew, Zachary Shepherd of San Francisco, Calif., and a niece, Elizabeth Shepherd of Boston, Mass. She was preceded in death by her parents, James W. Kemp and Barbara J. Rhonda - So VERY sorry for your loss. Jan was one of a kind woman and leader, with such compassion and so willing to share herself. I always chuckle remembering the story you told about taking away her cell phone for the cruise! Such dedication. May your memories help make this a touch better. God Bless and RIP Jan :)

I would like to wish my condolences to the friends, family and loved one of Jan. I have been in the VA many years and am aware of her many professional contributions, but only now realize she also shared my own streets and playgrounds growing up in Carthage NY. Again, offering my sympathy, and hoping her memory becomes a comfort to all those that were guided by her leadership and or her love.

Rhonda,
Tommy and I will always treasure the short time that we had to spend with you and Jan. I myself will always appreciate and honor the privilege I had to work with such a dedicated and committed professional. She was one in a million who touched the lives of so many and helped to save many more. She really was the best choice for "Federal Employee of the Year" and I was glad she was so honored while she was still here to receive it.

As many have already articulately described, she was a wonderful and talented woman. I worked for her for about 3 years, indirectly as an SPC. She stood out as someone you could count on-she contacted you back immediately. She cared deeply about people and that was very evident. She fought valiantly for suicide prevention. She will always be remembered. Rhonda may you know that we all saw and experienced her light in this world and it is still shinning.

Although I have only known Jan for the last two years, I have come to know her as a loving, caring, bright and smiling light.

I did not know of all of her accomplishments in life but I am not surprised by any of them. What an amazing woman!

I have met her sister and loved her dad. Her family is amazing and I will miss seeing her each week when I come to walk her beloved Lily.

Thinking of the family, Rhonda and Lily. My heart goes out to all of you.

I am one of the many people who had the privilege of working with Jan. One way we all can honor her is when in a difficult situation to stop and ask ourselves "What would Jan do?"--and then follow her lead.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Jan since the start up of the crisis line. What a wonderful and caring person she was. She was my friend, my mentor and in was a privilege to work with her. They could not have selected a more caring and knowledgeable person to develop and oversee the development of the Veterans Crisis Hotline. She has been and will be missed.

Jan will appropriately be remembered as the engineer of VA's suicide prevention programs and Suicide Prevention Hotline, which have been responsible for saving unknown numbers of Veterans' lives. But she also was a champion for Veteran centered care in VA's Central Office and engineered the first major funding for peer specialists in VA, that led to the hiring and training of over 800 Veterans, who now work along side our other mental health practitioners. May God bless and bring comfort to Jan's family & friends. We have been blessed by a life that was unselfish and lived for others.
