Clarine Brown Obituary

Clarine Brown Clarine Brown was born February 9, 1914to Irma & Claude L. Barnaby. She died on July 9, 2009 in Midland at Manor Park. She grew up in Waco and when she finished school in 1931 she took a business course and worked in the filing department of an insurance office. Realizing this would be an extended path to buying a car, etc, she enrolled in the Texas State College for women in Denton. She majored in advertising but took many art classes and had a double major. Her father strongly suggested a minor in education. She didn't dream she would spend years as first an elementary teacher and later as an arts and crafts junior high school teacher, retiring in 1983. She loved to read and also spent many years working on her family genealogy, taking one line back to 1066. She joined the Texas Daughters of the Civil war when she learned a great-grandfather, John T. Barnaby who served at the Battle of Sabins Pass was the only person from Texas named Barnaby in the Civil War. She was a member of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas through an ancestor who served against Santa Anna and his wife and children were in the Runaway Scrape. After WWII, she helped reorganize the Odessa DAR and served as a Regent of the Nathaniel Davis chapter and other DAB offices and represented the Odessa chapter twice at Continental Congress in Washington, DC. She served as President of the Odessa Study Club 1982-1984 and held other offices also. She married George Lynn Brown in 1940 in Big Spring. They moved to Odessa in 1945 and George leased the J.E. Parker Ranch at Andrews and they spent 15 years in Odessa and on Andrews ranches and she sometimes went with George to New Mexico. They moved to Manor Park retirement center in Midland in 1996. George died November 10, 2003. Both of their cremated remains will be placed at Resthaven Memorial Park. She is survived by her niece, Mrs. Lacy Dickey of Duncanville, TX; and a brother, Harold T. Barnaby of Duncanville, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. To place online condolences please visit www.mem.com.

Clarine was incredibly bright and had a keen sense of humor. I admired her spunk and enthusiasm for life. She made me laugh. She was a dear friend to my mother, Mary Frances Smith who lived around the corner from her at Manor Park. She was so kind to visit my Mom and brighten her day with her wit and so sweet to bring Mom goodies and desserts. When my Mom died April 4, she came by Mom's house and hugged me and cried with me. I so appreciated her friendship!
Whenever I was in Midland, I enjoyed visiting her and chatting about history, plants, current events. She lived life to the fullest and was a lifelong learner. Clarine, job well done here on this earth and I wish you a beautiful life in the hereafter.
