Guillermo Callo Obituary

Guillermo A. Callo, MD
04/16/1946 - 04/19/2025
Guillermo Antonio Callo Ochoa, MD of Midland, Tx, passed away peacefully at home on April 19th 2025 at age 79 surrounded by his loving family.
Guillermo was born on April 16th, 1946 to his mother Gloria Alejandrina Ochoa Luna and father Arturo Felipe Callo Barrios in Sicuani Peru located in the Andes mountains. Guillermo was the oldest of 7 children; he had 2 sisters: Norma and Sonia and 4 brothers: Fernando, Oscar, Edgar and Arturo.
Guillermo was a former cadet of the Military College Francisco Bolgnesi in Arequipa Peru where he graduated at age 16 and thereafter was accepted into medical school in Peru's capital, Lima. He was a graduate of Universidad Nacional Mayor De San Marcos Facultad De Medicina San Fernando in 1972.
Guillermo often liked to share his unique experience of working as a new doctor in the Amazon Jungle when his team had to evacuate their camp one night after an ambush by an indigenous Amazonian tribe. Shortly after his unforgettable jungle encounter he transferred to a petroleum ship off the coast of Peru where he befriended the ship's captain who later helped facilitate Guillermos path to New York where he completed his residency to become a doctor specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Guillermo met his wife Paula Louise Clifton, RN in 1975 at St. Joseph Hospital in Towson, Maryland. The two were married in Maryland in 1977 and began their journey together as newlyweds, doctor and nurse.
The new couple moved to the small West Texas town of Andrews in 1978 where Dr. Callo started his first office and welcomed his two children Carlos and Rose. In 1983 the Callo family moved to Midland, Tx where Dr. Callo expanded his practice and became a fellow colleague of the Midland medical community.
Dr. Callo delivered over 4,000 babies in his 35+ years of practice in Peru, Andrews and Midland, Tx. He was a proud member of the Colegio Medico Del Peru and the Peruvian American Medical Society and volunteered his services to those in need across various remote regions throughout Peru.
He was a member of FIDE, the International Chess Federation and an avid lover of chess, soccer and tennis. Guillermo was a lover of animals but especially his chickens, dogs and Peruvian Paso horses. He loved to study world history and listen to classical music, especially Spanish guitar. Guillermo's hobbies and passion for learning new things kept him young. He had an infectious zest for life and an unmatchable sense of humor. In his retirement years you could often find him in Peru, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas at his ranch, enjoying a glass of wine while sitting next to the river admiring the endless beauty of the mountains that surrounded him.
Dr. Callo is survived by his wife Paula Callo of 48 years, children Carlos Callo and his wife Lauren, Rose Callo Johnson and her husband Marshall Johnson. He leaves behind 4 granddaughters, 1 grandson and 1 great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gloria Alejandrina Ochoa Luna, Arturo Felipe Callo Barrios and his brother Arturo Callo.

The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care and companionship provided by his CNA caregivers during the last months of his life: Sandra, Carmen, Mia and Angela.

A mass in dedication to Guillermo will be held on Saturday, May 3rd 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Midland Texas.

I am so saddened by the news of Dr. Callo. He was one of the doctors for whom I held the greatest respect and fondness. Dr. Callo and I really developed a relationship during the time we operated together every Thursday. Not only did he have excellent technique but he was generous in his teaching and in giving me opportunities at the operating table. He was always kind and caring with a warm demeanor. He was truly a gentleman.

As the youngest of 7 siblings, I have always respected and loved my brother. Unfortunately, due to the age differences (I'm 15 years younger), I have not enjoyed enough his humor, his vast intelect, his love for "gallos", his love for spanish guitar and various other passions in life that he found time to embrace despite his busy life as a OBGYN. But, nonetheless, I will always treasure the beautiful things he did in life as I was growing up... for instance, I truly enjoyed the monkey he brought home when he was 26 years old just after graduating from San Marcos, the trip to the soccer world cup in Spain in 1982 and my visit to him in Cuzco, Midland and the many times he crashed me in chess... too many stories to tell that in every aspect and moment we exhibited the bond that even death can't erase. Brother I miss you more than words allow and I carry you with me always.... love Fernando

We have so many warm and unique memories of Dr. Callo as Carlos, Rose, and Anthony were young friends growing up together. The Callo home was always a place for love, learning and adventure. Thanks for the memories Dr. Callo and Paula.

I became a patient of Dr. Callo in 1981. He delivered both of my babies. He was a kind compassionate man. He had a great sense of humor and a gentle smile. Even when I would see him at the courthouse with jury duty he would give me a hug. Loved him dearly. Heaven definitely gained an angel. Praying for his family to have peace and comfort during this time of loss.

Dr Callo will always hold a special place in my heart. He was the first doctor I worked with after finishing nursing school (2002) and he set the bar pretty high for all doctors after him. He was truly a wonderful person and a great friend and he will be missed.

We appreciate Dr. Callo so much. After losing our first child at birth in another town, we came to see Dr. Callo in Andrews, and he took wonderful care of me and our newborn daughter, Caitlyn. Later, in Midland, he delivered our son, Drew, and, as always, gave me and the baby great care. We are so thankful for him! Prayers from the Ervin family for the Callo family.

As a close family member (we were first cousins) I keep deeply in my heart beautiful memories of the many occasions we had together. Our families enjoyed celebrations either in Midland or San Antonio, where we lived. I know first hand the love for his family and for humanity. Always looking to help and make an impact on the lives of the needy.
I will miss him. He was an exemplary man.
