Jack Shreffler Obituary

Jack Shreffler
09/20/1935 - 07/19/2025
John Jackie Boyer Shreffler, 89 years, 10 months, passed from this earthly life to Heaven on Saturday, July 19th at 2:00 am after battling a lengthy illness caused by Covid. He was the youngest of nine children of Sam and Zina Shreffler, born in September 1935. He was named for his maternal grandfather, John Boyer, but his older siblings had picked Jackie as his name, hence John Jackie Boyer Shreffler. He was born and raised on a farm in western Pennsylvania. He married Ruthie Morrison in 1954 and they celebrated their 71st anniversary on July 9th, 2025. In September 1955, they moved to Jal, NM, for work with El Paso Natural Gas. He worked for EPNG retiring in 1988 after 33 years of service as a welder, draftsman, and supervisor.
In 1968 Jack was asked to create a Hunter's Safety and Education curriculum for the State of New Mexico. He wrote manuals but also taught hands on experience to many youth in the Jal community. He was given special recognition of his 40 years of dedication to hunter's safety by the New Mexico Game & Fish Department. In 1998 Jack was honored at the Jal Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet as Volunteer of the Year for his service to Jal. He was the president of the Jal Gun Club for many years and helped to manage the shooting range. He was a lifetime member of the NRA (National Rifle Association). He loved being outdoors and hunting. He had many tales of hunting excursions with family members and friends.
In the early 1960's Jack was a member of the Methodist Church in Jal, helping to build the newer church building with many of his friends. The church at that time sponsored the local Boy Scout Troop #43, and Jack served as Assistant Scoutmaster with Shorty Aldridge. He remained active in Scouting leadership serving on numerous Boards of Review and as Scoutmaster. Jack later joined the First Baptist Church in Jal where he taught Sunday School and served as church deacon.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Zina Shreffler, but also all of his siblings: Ethel Shreffler Shorts, Vergil Shreffler, Grace Shreffler Latchaw, Robert (Bob) Shreffler, Gerald Shreffler, Ronald Shreffler, Gene Shreffler, Ada Mae Shreffler Mason, and a neice, Helen Rebecca Jordan, who was like a sister. He and Ruthie also lost two of their four children: Carla Denise, age 8, from leukemia and John Alroy, age 26, from a truck accident.
He is survived by his wife, Ruthie, and two daughters: Cindy Shreffler Davis (Tom Davis) of Andrews and Christy Shreffler Brininstool (Carl Brininstool) of Midland. Jack and Ruthie love spending time with their six grandchildren: Ginger Brininstool Pollock (Steve Pollock), Carly Davis Kahl, Craig Davis (Kym Davis), Paula Brininstool Plumlee, Cara Brininstool, and Christopher Davis (Katie Davis). They have nine great-grandchildren: Kyle Kahl, J. T. Davis, James Kahl, Justin Pollock, Luke Plumlee, Emily Plumlee, Maggie Davis, Megan Pollock, and Carter Davis. They have one great-great-grandson, Cade Pollock.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Jal, NM, at 10 a.m. MT on Thursday, July 24, with graveside following at the Kermit Cemetery, in Kermit, TX.
