Joe Hathaway passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025. Born on August 14, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joe was the son of Milt and Lil Hathaway. He grew up with a sharp wit and a curious mind that carried him through Highland Park High School and then to North Texas University. He would later move to Midland, TX, and begin a 40+ year journey within that community.
Joe began his professional journey with Cutco Knives and later found success with IBM and Uarco before launching his own business in business form sales. His hobbies included a licensed amateur radio operator, avid camera collector, and a proud member of the Midland Police Department's Citizens on Patrol (COPS) program.
For over 30 years, he served as the beloved bar manager of the Summer Mummers. His contributions extended to the Midland Community Theatre, where he was a stage manager for numerous productions and served multiple terms as President. Joe and Ann Hathaway, wife of 46 years, originally met while working at Summer Mummers and continued to be a part of the Midland community theater for decades.
Joe's legacy of humor and generosity lives on in his large and loving family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ann Hathaway, and his brother Wayne Hathaway. From his first marriage, he is survived by his children Milt, MaryAnn, and Lisa, along with four grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. After marrying Ann Hathaway, he welcomed stepchildren Doug, Kelly, and James into his life with open arms, gaining six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
An avid saltwater fisherman, a connoisseur of jokes (especially the naughty limerick variety), a devoted dog lover, and a proud member of the "Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch" joke club, Joe brought laughs to everyone lucky enough to know him. He was a master of punchlines, a keeper of traditions, and a true original.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Midland community. His stories, jokes, and unshakable sense of humor will live on in all of us.
