Lenneth McKinzie Obituary

Lenneth James "Len" McKinzie
03/22/1947 - 01/04/2026
Lenneth James "Len" McKinzie, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on January 4, 2026 in Midland, Texas. Born on March 22, 1947, in Midland, Len was the youngest of twins born to Collier and Hepsia McKinzie. From his earliest days, he carried a quiet confidence, sharp intellect, and unmistakable wit that would become his lifelong signature.
Len graduated in 1965 from Carver Junior and Senior High School in Midland. Later that year, he began his studies at The University of Texas at Austin, embracing campus life during a pivotal era of change and opportunity. While at UT, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Epsilon Iota Chapter, where he served as Dean of Pledges from 1967-68 and Comptroller from 1969-70. His leadership and sense of brotherhood left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
A dedicated professional, Len devoted over 35 years to the telecommunications industry, beginning his career at Southwestern Bell Telephone, where he earned a reputation for reliability, technical skill and genuine care for the people he served. As the industry evolved, Len continued to grow with it - transitioning into roles with Cingular Wireless during the major wireless expansion era, and later with AT&T, where he completed his distinguished career. He navigated the industry's evolution with skill and adaptability, earning numerous accolades and recognitions throughout his career. Colleagues knew him as dependable, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to excellence. In addition to his career in the telecommunications industry, he also worked in the family business, McKinzie's Food Store.
Beyond his professional life, Len was a history buff who loved staying informed about politics and world events. He had a keen mind for understanding the past and its impact on the present. He also had a passion for cars-first his Volkswagen Karmann Ghia from the early 70's and notably his 1977 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which he proudly owned and drove for many years. His sharp wit, dry humor, and ability to deliver the perfect one-liner made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
Len was preceded in death by his parents, Collier and Hepsia McKinzie; his sister, Melvia "Nuddy" Jones; and his nephew, Lane McKinzie.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Joyce Crosby of Midland, TX; his twin brother, Kenneth McKinzie (Patricia) of Austin, TX; niece Breshena Marshall of Dallas, TX, nephew Byron Crosby (Bridgette) of Stafford, VA, niece Trina Manor (Darryl) of Austin, TX, nephew Derrick McKinzie (Amy) of Garland, TX, niece Keona Jones of Los Angeles, CA and nephew Amilicar Jones (Carol) of Los Angeles, CA; along with a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Even though I had not seen Len in many years, my memories of him during our Carver High school days were outstanding. He was a true gentleman, courteous and outgoing. My condolences to Ken, Joyce and Kenneth White. Be blessed. Ramona Shaw Ball
