Richard Zubiate Obituary

Richard Zubiate
02/07/1940 - 08/22/2024
Richard Zubiate, 84, passed away on August 22, 2024, surrounded by his children and friends at his ranch near Brownwood, Texas. He was born in Marfa, Texas on February 7, 1940, to Cruz and Sixta Zubiate. He attended school in Marfa and then Sul Ross University to study Accounting. He married Ida Ramirez of Marfa and had four children. He was a devout Christian in his later life. His favorite Bible verse, which he taught to his children was Psalm 23.
Richard spent most of his life as a woodworker. He loved building furniture and restoring antiques. In the late 60s, he was a member of the Ysleta Gun Club where he enjoyed competing in metallic silhouette shooting. He mastered the art of hitting a target at 500 meters shooting offhand. He was an avid outdoorsman and went on many deer hunts around Marfa, Presidio, and Van Horn. Every spring he would take his two sons to a lake in Northern Mexico called El Granero. They would spend a week or more in this remote area, catching largemouth bass.
He spent his retired years living on his little ranch near Brownwood, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his son Peter Zubiate and his wife Ida Zubiate. He is survived by his two daughters Hope Espinosa and Debra Carlin, and his son Paul Zubiate; his two sisters Evangeline Baldwin and Anita Segura. He has ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the compassionate in-home care provided by Alpha Omega Hospice. A special thanks goes out to the Martinez family; Jose Luis, Genoveva, Elpidio, and Josue of Brownwood, Texas. They looked in on Richard every week for the past two years. Elpidio and Josue took him out to breakfast and helped him track down unusual single-shot rifles that he wanted to buy.
A burial service will be held on Saturday, September 7th at 11 :00 a.m. at Cementerio De La Merced in Marfa, Texas. A memorial service will follow at the Marfa USO Building.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, 2914 Swiss Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75204.
Services have been entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home in Alpine, Texas.

Condolences to the family of Richard. I knew Richard from way back in Marfa. Richard was older than I was so we never really had a conversation. I moved to Midland back in the early 80´s. Around 1998 I was in HEB in Midland. I saw Richard doing some shopping, I went over and introduced my self. I told Richard hey I´m from Marfa. We talked about Marfa and things that were happening. Richard spoke greatly of his family. I used to run into Richard at HEB every two or three months by chance. We talked about things that were happening in Marfa. In 2018 I left Midland and lost contact with Richard. It was a pleasure to have known Richard.
RIP Richard.
