Sandra Sledge Obituary

Sandra (Sandy) Lynn Sledge, 65, of Midland, TX, went home to her Heavenly Father Wednesday January 4, 2023. Sandy was born January 5, 1957 in Alpine, TX to Freddie (Sandlin) and Gordon Harmon. Sandy spent her adolescent years spreading love and laughter all over the state of Texas before she graduated from San Marcos High School in 1975. Sandy's zest for life was ever-present as she was the president of both the National Honor Society and the Future Teachers of America, the drum major of the marching band, elected most popular, Miss San Marcos High School and crowned homecoming queen. Sandy pursued her love of education by attending Baylor University where she earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education, made life-long friends and met the love of her life, David. Sandy loved her years in Waco. A social butterfly and Kappa Kappa Gamma sister, Sandy never met a stranger. She also never ceased to amaze us with her many talents, some of those she honed while spending college summers as an Aquamaid at Aquarina Springs in San Marcos. After marrying David on August 11, 1979, they moved to Midland where they would begin their careers and start their family. Sandy spent many years teaching speech and P.E. at Goddard Junior High and then The Hillander School where their two children, Shelley and Sam, would spend their elementary school days. Sandy was very generous in the time she gave to others, whether formally through volunteering or just taking time for a few simple words of encouragement. Her availability to fill a need knew no bounds. During her 43 years in Midland, Sandy served her community in numerous ways, including: the boards of the Salvation Army, High Sky Children's Ranch, National Kidney Foundation, Palmer Drug Abuse Program, Boys and Girls Club. She also committed her time to PTAs, served as President of both the Lee High School Volleyball and Football booster clubs, ACT 9, a decade in the Junior League and a founding board member of the Rexanna's Foundation for fighting lung cancer. Sandy enjoyed spending time playing tennis, making quilts for all of her favorite people, time at the lake, going to Hobby Lobby and Target, and countless hours spent at the beach with her toes in the sand. Eight years ago, when her first grandson was born, she became lovingly known as Cha Cha to her three favorite tiny humans, Silas, John David and Ella Claire. Sandy's commitment to and love of her family never wavered. She adored her husband, cherished her children, loved her children's spouses as if they were her own and dove head-first into her role as Cha Cha. Sandy spread laughter and light wherever she went and made every acquaintance her best friend. While Sandy leaves a legacy of joy and hard-work, she also leaves an incredible legacy of faith in God and a life-long love and commitment to her wonderful husband of 43 years. We will forever remember her resolute faith, seemingly endless energy, competitiveness, ever positive attitude, affinity for the biggest and brightest of everything - clothing, jewelry, decor and life. Sandy is survived by her husband, David Sledge of Midland; daughter Shelley Cunningham and husband Kyle of Midland; son Sam Sledge and wife Helen of Midland; sister Kim Harmon of Arlington; brother Kyle Harmon and wife Sheri of Mansfield; father Gordon Harmon of Mansfield; grandsons Silas and John David Sledge of Midland; granddaughter Ella Cunningham of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved very much. Sandy is preceded in death by her mother Freddie Harmon; sister Sharon Wartes; father-in-law Gene Sledge; and granddaughter Faith Ann Cunningham. The Sledge Family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Sandy's caretakers and special helpers who made her life as full as possible over the last three years, as well as those who left their salons to make house calls. Visitation will be from 5:00pm-7:00pm, Thursday January 12, 2023 at The Branch, Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home (3800 N Big Spring St, Midland, Texas). A celebration of Sandy's life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Stonegate Fellowship (6000 W. Wadley, Midland, Texas). Arrangements are under Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Sandy's honor be made to Rexanna's Foundation for Fighting Lung Cancer (https://rexannasfoundation.org/).

Sandy was a true light where ever she went! One can´t help but smile when thinking of her. Her story said it perfectly when it said, "...taking time for a few simple words of encouragement." She never missed an opportunity to say hi or ask about my family when I ran into her, probably in Target . Heaven received a beautiful and precious lady! I look forward to seeing her again one day
Much love to the entire Sledge family
