Stephen Sell Obituary

Stephen Glen Sell
09/09/1954 - 08/08/2025
Stephen "Steve" Glen Sell passed from this life to be with his Lord on August 8, 2025. He was born to loving parents, Joyce Ann Wheeler Sell and Marion Merle Sell in Mission, Texas, on September 9, 1954. He was in Fort Worth, Texas, when he lost his 10-year fight with various forms of cancer. He battled hard for his children and grandchildren!
In 1973, Steve graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, in Midland, Texas, and then attended Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth. After his graduation from TCU in 1977, he began his career in Fort Worth in the Oil and Gas industry with Southland Royalty. After a few years, Steve left Fort Worth and began his long and illustrious career as an independent producer and operator in Midland, Texas. He loved making deals!!! In Midland, he met Lisa Carole Welton, the mother of his children. While their marriage did not last, their mutual love and respect for each other remained until the final moment of his life.
Countless stories of Steve and his generosity have been shared with his family and friends. He was always the person to "give the shirt off his back" if needed. As remembered by Betty Starnes, founder of the Hillcrest School of Midland, a school built to give hope to students with learning differences: Steve brought his love, dedication, and unwavering support to many areas of his life, but Hillcrest School held a special place in his heart. The school was truly blessed by his guidance and passion. Steve never hesitated to step in wherever he could make a difference in the lives of the students and the community. He played a vital leadership role in recruiting new board members, organizing fundraising golf tournaments and dove hunts, and inspiring friends and business associates to contribute generously to Hillcrest's mission. Whether walking the halls, serving on the board, leading fundraisers, or simply showing up when needed, Steve's commitment never wavered. His steadfast support for all things Hillcrest rooted in genuine care for its mission and the children it serves left a lasting legacy. He was more than a board member; he was "all in" and his presence will be deeply missed.
He was always very involved with his children's activities. He would coach soccer and baseball, regardless of his knowledge of the sport. He loved camping with his children on Indian Princess and Guide trips, hunting with his boys, working with his daughter, water skiing on glassy waters, spending time with friends, Halloween and "hayrides," and watching his kids and grandchildren's sports and dance recitals. Steve was always known for having a good time, but most importantly, making sure those around him had a great time. In his final years, he moved to Lake Granbury where he loved cruising on his pontoon boat with friends and family and relaxing on his deck overlooking the lake. It was the ultimate place to spend time with his grandchildren.
Steve was a loving father, Supa, son, brother and friend; he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Steve is survived by his son Taylor Sell and wife Jennifer, of Midland, Stephanie Hunt and husband Matthew, of Midland, Spencer Sell and wife Caitlin, of Aledo; their mother Lisa Sell, of Midland; his brother Richard Sell and wife Lyn, of Houston; niece Lauren Sell and husband Jonathan Bryce and their son Miles (Steve's great-nephew), of Austin; and most importantly and most beloved grandchildren Caroline, Griffin, Parker, Margaret, and Colby.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Hillcrest School of Midland, 2800 N. A Street, Midland, Texas 79705, and Angiosarcoma - Sarcoma Foundation of America, 9899 Main Street, Ste. 204, Damarcus, Maryland 20872.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, September 5, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church of Midland.

I can remember to this day some of the best times growing up with Steve. We lived one street from each other and spent a lot of time together. Steve will certainly be missed.

My heart is absolutely broken. I was so eagerly waiting for news that Steve's new treatment was working and that he was feeling great again. I can't believe he is gone.

Fifteen years ago, a friendship began that would become one of the most important relationships of my life. Steve was more than a friend; he was a mentor, a father figure, and the person who gave me the courage to pursue bigger things. He was a brilliant, easygoing man with a contagious energy and the biggest heart I have ever known. He spoke about his family with so much love and pride. We shared so many stories and laughed until we cried, reminiscing about the memories we built.

The last time I saw him, I wanted to hold on to that hug forever, not knowing it would be our last. Thank you for everything, my friend. I miss you.

My brother, Steve, was an amazing man and a true original. We shared many wonderful memories, even if he could be frustrating and stubborn at times (as brothers often are). I have deep admiration and respect for him. He and Lisa raised wonderful kids that Steve loved. It was clear that his kids and grandkids meant the world to him - and they knew it. The family provided such amazing love and support during Steve's cancer ordeal that I know he was greatly comforted.

Steve was quietly compassionate, generous, and strong. I witnessed his incredible courage in the face of a difficult diagnosis. Even when he was feeling awful, he tried to put those around him at ease with his humor and quick wit.

This note is inadequate in expressing my feelings, but I know this: I love him deeply and miss him terribly. It was a privilege to laugh with him and just to be his brother. His passing leaves a big hole in my life.

Growing up in Midland, we lived on Cimmaron while I went to junior high and high school. A family moved in next door to us, The Sells, and I got to know Richard and his little brother Steve, who I really enjoyed knowing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
