Stephens Harper Obituary

Stephens Tucker Harper
01/05/1949 - 09/04/2024
Stephens Tucker Harper passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Steve was born in Austin on January 5, 1949, to Barbara and Tom Harper, Jr. He spent his childhood enjoying the outdoors, riding his bike to play golf at Muny Golf Course, playing sports, and hunting with his family. After graduating from Austin High School, Steve went on to graduate from the University of Texas where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
In August of 1973, Steve married Eleanor Dill. They immediately moved to New York City, where Steve became one of just thirty trainees from all over the world selected for Chase Manhattan's prestigious Global Credit Training Program, under the leadership of David Rockefeller. Steve's banking career with Chase took him back to Texas, where he played a key role in establishing the International Department in Houston. In 1980, his career led him to Midland, Texas, where he joined the "old" First National Bank of Midland. In 1998, when oil prices were at historic lows, Steve chartered and was President of the newly formed First National Bank of Midland. His passion for banking was evident in the relationships he built with his customers, finding great fulfillment in helping others succeed. As CFO of Centripump, Steve took on his final business venture under the direction and friendship of John Stuard.
Throughout his years in Midland, Steve remained an active member of the community. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church. He served as a board member of the March of Dimes and the Buffalo Trail Council of Boy Scouts and was President and board member of Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, Steve was a member of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee, and acted as Chairman of the Finance Committee of Midland Memorial Hospital.
Steve is survived by his wife of 51 years, Eleanor Harper; his daughter, Rebecca Reneau and her husband Dave, along with their children, Arden and Connor, of Dallas; his son, Scott Harper and his wife Jessica, along with their children, Anna Claire and Dawson, of Midland; his brother, Thomas Harper III of Houston; along with many nieces and nephews.
Steve's contagious smile and laugh were his trademarks. He found great comfort in his relationship with Christ, which he passed on to his children. We will miss his genuine heart and love for life.
Friends are invited to a memorial service celebrating Steve's life with the family at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 27, in the chapel of First Baptist Church, 2104 W. Louisiana Avenue in Midland. A reception will follow in the nearby chapel foyer.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Steve may be directed to the Redeemer Church of Midland at P.O. Box 8333, Midland, TX, 79708 or online at redeemermidland.org and Save Muny Golf Course in Austin online at themunyconservancy.com/donate.

Cynthia and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's passing. What an incredible, warm, sweet man he was. He always had a huge smile on his beaming face along with a great infectious laugh. We shared so many fond memories with him thru his family, via our children's school and with other close friends. I will never forget the incredible times we spent with our daughters while participating in the Indian Princess program...such fun memories. Our deepest and sincere condolences to Eleanor and Rebecca. Prayers to you both and to the memory of one of the finest men we have ever have ever known. He will be sorely missed, and my God Rest His Beautiful Sweet Soul.

Dear Eleanor and family,
I was surprised and saddened to hear of Steve´s passing. I´ve known Steve personally and professionally since we worked together at FNB of Midland in the early 1980´s. He was such a delight to be around, so upbeat, kind, energetic and fun! I especially enjoyed our visits in the early days of First Capital Bank. He was so enthused about the bank´s prospects and the team they had put together. He was also a joy to be around at First Baptist. His laughter and wit will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Grace and peace to you and your family.

Dear Eleanor and Family,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Stephens. It is never easy to lose a loved one.

I first met Stephens at UT, and later he joined us in Midland, becoming not only our banker but also our golf buddy. Stephen was always a joy to be around, both in business and socially. It was easy to see that he was a man of great substance. Unfortunately, I did not see my friend in the last several years, but I cannot forget his always smiling face.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

Sincerely,
Michael Hochman

Steve was instrumental in helping us create a successful business here in Midland in the late 1990´s. No one would give us a small start-up loan but he trusted our business plan, took a chance and we will never forget his support. It changed our lives forever. We will remember him always.

Steve was a classmate of mine at Austin High School (Class of 1967) and later at UT-Austin. I remember him as soft spoken and one the nicest guys in our class who always had a smile. I haven't seen him in a long time but will remember him fondly. RIP Steve.

I heard his infectious laughter for the first time in 4th grade at Casis Elementary. I followed that laughter through the halls of O´Henry and Austin High. The "Loyal Forever" community is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his passing. I can promise you that no one had an unkind word to say about that sweet soul. Steve drove a VW bus in a 1970 European tour that I was privileged to share with him, often riding shot gun in effort to keep him awake during those all night drives. Only once did he plow through a security gate at a German border! His hair grew so long, we dressed him in pigtails. Always the gentleman; ALWAYS that laughter! One of the hardest things about getting older is having to let go of treasured friends; this loss is profound for so many. His life was rich with purpose and he will always be missed and remembered and treasured.

Steve was the most amazing man, one who loved and treasured his family. We first met in Katherine Ledbetter´s 2nd grade class at Casis. To this day, remember Steve´s warmth and wonderful smile.

Everyone in the AHS Class of `67 loved Steve dearly! You are in our hearts and prayers.
