Thomas Sloan Obituary

Thomas Menzies (Tom M.) Sloan, 81, long-time resident of Midland passed away September 16, 2014, after a brief illness. Tom was born in San Angelo, Texas, on April 16, 1933, to Thomas Nettleton (T.N.) Sloan and Mary Frances ("Tany") Sloan. Tany and Tom followed T.N. to Midland in 1935. Tom attended Midland public schools until Middle school when he attended Dallas Country Day School of Dallas which became Greenhill Academy where he graduated in 1952. Tom began his college career at SMU where he became a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1958. Tom was married to Mary Ann McRae of Midland in 1956. In 1986, he married Nancy Hughston Watts of Midland and Nancy preceded Tom in death in February of 2004. In 2011, Tom married Sharla Baker of Midland. Tom worked as an Oil and Gas Landman during his college years and then he began his financial career with H Hentz & Co. which through a series of mergers later became Morgan Stanley where he retired as a Senior Vice President. Tom was a Scout Master and loved the outdoors. He served as a Midland City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem. He served on the Airport Board and was on the Board of Directors of Texas Rangers Law Enforcement. Tom was proceeded in death by his parents, Tany and T.N. Sloan; his sister, Susan Sloan of Hawaii. Tom's surviving family members include his wife, Sharla Baker Sloan; son, Thomas McRae (Tom Jr.) Sloan and his wife Shirley Sutton Sloan of Midland; daughter, Katie Sloan Goggans and her husband Chris Goggans of Trophy Club, Texas; son, Daniel Watts and his wife Allison of Midland; and son, James Baker of Midland; grandchildren, Christopher Cherryhomes, Sarah Cherryhomes, Cody Goggans, Regan Adkinson, Cavan Spence, Thomas Sneed Sloan, Coleman Watts and Lexi Watts, Joshua Mims; and great grandchildren, Luke and Rose. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2014, at Christ Church, with Reverend Henry Pendergrass officiating. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that you make memorial donations to Hospice of Midland or Christ Church. Pallbearers will be, Christopher Cherryhomes, Cavan Spence, Cody Goggans, Coleman Watts, Thomas Sneed Sloan, Joshua Mims, Tom Warden, and Eddie Wallace. I grew up getting to go hunting with Mr. Sloan on many an occasion. To me, that was as good as it could get.
He was the type of man that I imagine came from the same mold as those who built this country years ago. We can sure some more like him.
I will always remember him smiling, laughing that deep laugh from his belly and yes, wearing shooting glasses.
