Yvonne Eleanor (Wagster) Black Hughes was born January 11, 1938, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Thadeous Craig "Jack" and Leona (Hutchings) Wagster. She graduated from Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School in 1956 and earned her B.A. in Religious Education from the University of Tulsa, where she met her husband, Sammy "Max" Black. They were married on June 6, 1959, and lived in Hobbs, NM; Monahans, TX; Eureka, KS; Lafayette, LA; and Crane, TX, before settling in Midland, TX, in 1969, where she resided until 2024 upon which time she moved to Conroe, TX.
She earned her M.A. plus 30 hours in Administration from UTPB and served Midland ISD for 23 years as both teacher and administrator before retiring in 1998.
Following her spiritual birthday in July 1950, Yvonne strived to be an active member of God's Kingdom; she shared HIS Word joyfully to those she knew, singing in choir, teaching or coordinating Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
Deeply involved in her community, Yvonne volunteered with Meals on Wheels, served on several committees at First Baptist Church-most recently the Benevolence Committee-and participated in organizations such as the Midland Retired Teachers Association where she served on the Board, Live on Stage, and Midland County Republican Women. She also volunteered as a docent at both the Petroleum Museum and the George W. Bush Childhood Home.
On December 6, 2008, Yvonne married Bobby Donald Hughes, gaining another beloved family, including Roddy and Lee Hughes, Marcus and Lisa Roberson, David Hughes, Mike and Linda Norton, Ken and Monette Harbert, Bobby Sherman, and their children and grandchildren. Bobby preceded her in death on April 11, 2014. She is also preceded in death by husband Sammy "Max" Black, May 9, 2003; daughter Robin Black Bolander March 26, 2020; her parents; her brother, Milton Wagster; brother in law Rex Black and wife, Carita Black; Wayne Allen Black; grandsons, Matthew Miller and John Roberson, and stepson Roddy Hughes.
Yvonne is lovingly remembered by her family, who rejoice in the promise of reunion in Heaven (John 3:16): two sons, Stephen Max Black and wife Cheryl of Edmond, OK; and Ronald Craig Black and wife Sharlene of Montgomery, TX; four grandchildren, Tyler Max Black, Sarah Nicole Black Kindle and husband Doyle of Houston, TX; Amber Schneemann and husband Tucker; granddaughter in law Gina Miller of Washington, DC; great-grandchildren Cannon and Caroline Schneemann; great-granddaughters Charlotte and Vivian Kindle; niece Carol Black Dyess; nephew Craig Black; and sister-in-law Jeanette Wagster.
Yvonne was blessed with two wonderful, loving husbands and a lifetime surrounded by the love of family and friends. She is now embraced forever by the unending love of God through Christ Jesus, her Savior and Lord (Luke 23:43).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Missions Ministry or Benevolence Fund of First Baptist Church, Midland.
