MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Marjorie Murdock Rees, of Mount Airy, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2014. Mrs. Rees was born May 2, 1920, in Troutman, the daughter of the late Brown and Bernice Arthurs Murdock. Mrs. Rees attended Mitchell College in Statesville. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family, and was the source of ceaseless support to her husband in his many professional and community activities. She was an avid gardener, with an artist's eye for color. She enjoyed painting, and participated enthusiastically in dance classes well into her seventies. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy for six decades and a past member of the church choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Floyd Eugene "Flip" Rees of Mount Airy; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Rees King and Michael Lowndes King of Mount Airy; and two brothers, Oswald Murdock of Troutman and Vaughn Murdock of South Yarmouth, Mass. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, John (holly lu) Rees and Gene (Peggy) Rees, all of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Marjorie (Chance) Reynolds, Dr. Mary Lynn King (Jeff Weigele), and Samuel Rees; three great-grandchildren, Chancellor, Rees, and Kate Reynolds; and a sister-in-law, Mildred S. Murdock of Troutman. The family is deeply grateful to Marjorie's devoted caregivers who provided her with loving, tender care during her final years. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Main St., Mount Airy, with Dr. Rob Evans and Mr. David Beal officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The Rees family will receive friends Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m. in the Ladies' Parlor at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Surry Community College Foundation, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, NC 27017; or First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1286, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Dear Gene,
Thinking of your family during this time of bereavement. As a waitress at Cross Creek, I remember serving your mom on Friday nights. What a sweet woman, always so kind.
