CANA, VA — Mr. Roger "Porter" Ayers, 77, of Cana, Va., passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Carroll County on October 2, 1938, to the late Solomon and Sullar Mae Guynn Ayers. Mr. Ayers was a member of Cana Baptist Church where he was a deacon and usher. He was a charter member of Cana Volunteer Fire Department, Cana Rescue Squad and the Ruritan Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Wanda Bowman Ayers of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Tonia Ayers of Cana; a grandchild, Brayden Ayers of Cana; two brothers, Charles Cecil Ayers of North Wilkesboro, Clifton "Cricket" Ayers of Lowgap; a sister-in-law, Ester Ayers of Cana; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by two brothers, Seawaltz Ayers, and Junior Ayers. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Cana Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Vass and the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Northern Hospital, the Surry EMS, the Woltz Hospice Home, Carroll County Advance Life Support Ambulance Services, Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, all the prayers and support from family, friends, and neighbors and a special thank you to Betty Mullins for all the love and care given to Porter during his illness. Barry and Family-So sorry to hear about Porter's passing. I enjoyed working with him at Starrett for several years. A good friend and Christian man. The world certainly could use more "Porters". Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Charles Greenwood
