It is with sadness that I learn of the passing of Whitey. He was a dear friend for a number of years at Wofford. Whitey had a way of always bringing a smile to your face and putting laughter in your heart. We were able to share many adventures together and create some remarkable memories. I know he would be pleased to know that his Tar Heels are on the way to the top again! May I express my deepest condolences to his family over the loss of a very special soul.

I met Whitey while attending Queens College. He could certainly make me laugh. We played tennis and partied together at the beach and in Virginia after I left Charlotte. We lost contact after I married in 1981 but he has never been nor will be forgotten. He was a delightful friend.

Somewhere in my treasures on Harris Road there is an ID bracelet given to me by Whitey ? year at Selwyn Elementary. I suppose it came as a gift following football on his lawn or after rounding up the stray cows from Morrocroft Farm. The Dobermans HATED the confusion that we made around the house and yard. Somewhere in my memories are the antics, the laughs, and the happiness in how wonderful he made me feel. Carry on, Whitey!

I really enjoyed my friendship with Whitey over the years, playing football in his front yard, and going skiing at Lake Norman in his boat. I will miss him. He was always fun and full of laughter.

I am very saddened to hear of Whitey's passing. We were friends and roommates in College. Unfortunately, we had not stayed in touch, but I have many great memories of those wonderful times at Wofford.

I am saddened to hear of Whitey's passing. I had not seen him in years but his name always came up when I got together with some of his old classmates. We always thought about him with warm feelings.

I will always remember his friendliness and his grin. The years we spent together at Selwyn, A.G., Myers Park, and our trip together to Camp Thunderbird were great times and I was privileged to know Whitey. I will remember him always.

I have always loved Whitey and always will. I was fortunate in the fact our friendship and devotion endured the course of 30 plus years. He was a true friend and one of my very favorite confidants and "playmates". I can never recall a time I did not welcome Whitey's company, whether we were doing good deeds, just playing around, or up to mischief! His delightful spirit will always be with us, and for that I am deeply grateful. I will miss Whitey; however, will keep our spirited, hilarious, and "catch up" conversation of last week foremost in my memories. Love to Rhetta, Betty, and Ginny.

Robert & I are going to miss Whitey. We had so many great times together, from Providence Cafe, to fixing tacos at Whitey's house, singing karaoke at Fairview Grille and watching Carolina basketball games together. Whitey always made us laugh, through bad times & good times, he always kept his sense of humor. We will never forget you and we will miss you. "Yeah Baby". We love you, Debbie & Robert Austin

Although I lost contact with Whitey over the years, this loss truly saddens me. Whitey and I were very close during our high school and college years, both going to Myers Park and Wofford. A true friend, a gift for wit, and a free spirit. We spent many good times together. I will truly miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Whitey has been promoted, and although it is sad and hurts us all, he is with the angels and our Lord. The memories are abundant, especially when we would carry him in his wheelchair up to lunch at Selwyn Elementary and then play endless hours of football in the grand fron yard on Sharon Rd. We were always made to feel welcome, and now we will miss him.

We are really going to miss seeing Whitey in the neighborhood. Our family really enjoyed being his friend and sharing our good and sad stories about our dogs. We had fun teasing him about which vehicle he would be driving or riding. Whitey always had a smile and a wave for us. Everyone will miss him! - Freda, Gary and Geoffrey Gummerson

Another sweet angel has flown home. I will miss Whitey very much. He was one of the best cousins that a person could ever have. I appreciate the times that he ate at the cafe with daddy. My prayers go out to Rhetta, Betty, and Ginny.

I will remember the drum section of the school band and all the fun and cutting up; riding mini-bikes (and crashing them; I still have the scars) between my house and Whitey's; tackle football on the Blakeney's front yard; and Whitey's great sense of humor and mischievous grin. He had a lot of good friends and will be missed.
