David Meier Obituary

David L. Meier died Monday evening, Aug. 4, 2008, surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dave was born May 26, 1959, in Seattle, the son of Frank and Raynita (Pene) Meier. As a child the family moved to Butte where Dave attended local schools and graduated from Butte High.

In 1983, he received his bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health with a minor in engineering science from Montana Tech.

He married his soulmate, Cheri Crowley, on May 17, 1980, in Butte.

Dave worked for the Montana Power as a line tech, was the ski department manager of Bob Ward and Sons in Butte, where he quickly became the assistant manager.

In 1986, he moved to Helena where he managed the Helena Bob Ward and Sons.

Later he went to work as the store manager of Office Stop in Helena, and following the merger with Boise Cascade, he returned to Butte and was the general sales manager. In 2001, Dave became the general sales manager for Montana Office Solutions 2, until his illness forced him to retire.

Dave had a deep affection and love for his family and friends. He enjoyed camping, skiing, fishing, playing softball, was an avid NASCAR fan, picnicking with his family and was an avid Montana Tech Oredigger fan.

When his father-in-law, John Crowley, passed away, Dave stepped in to be a big brother, mentor and father figure to his sisters and brothers-in-law.

One of his lasting tributes was being able to walk his daughter, Brenda, down the aisle on her wedding day this past May.

Dave was very active in the Butte community. He was a past board member of the Digger Athletic Association, belonged to the Toastmasters, served on the board of directors for the Salvation Army, and was an active parishioner of Holy Spirit Parish.

Dave's positive upbeat attitude will be missed by all his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John Crowley.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Cheri of Butte; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jesse Hafer; grandsons, Ethan and Tristan; mother, Raynita Meier and Larry Duncan of Missoula; father, Frank Meier and Macel Anderson of Sheridan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina and Sam Anderson of Missoula, and Cathy and Bill Schumacher of Coos Bay, Ore.; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Heidi Meier of Deer Lodge; mother-in-law, Donna Crowley of Butte; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Mike Kobler of Sebastopol, Calif., Cindy and Bill Lyle of Denver, Sue and Todd Fayram of Butte, Cathy and Henry Waldman of Butte, Tom and Jill Crowley of Butte, and Chris and Jake Petersen of Ridgefield, Wash.; special friends, Jim and Jackie Maunder of Missoula, and Randy and Teresa Nordquist of Pocatello, Idaho.

He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Colleen Ralph, Ken and Micki Palmer, and Jackie and Jim Smitham.

Relatives and friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in Holy Spirit Parish for visitations. Parish rosary services will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in Holy Spirit Parish. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorials: Highlands Hospice or to the Digger Athletic Association.

Dave was as kind and brave in his life as he was in going through his illness. He was one of those guys that everybody liked whether you were an athlete, a greaser, a "head", or even a geek like me. A piece of all of us leaves with Dave's passing but fond memories of him will help fill the void. Best regards to all of his friends and family.

Dave was our Elks Little League first baseman. I still think about how he "filled the shoes" of our graduated first baseman in 1971 and improved from an little Mercury St. 11-year old, lefty to the most improved in one year all-star I ever had on Elks.
Later, he continued his ways beating his old coach in softball at Stodden. So I finally tried "recruiting" him for my team once again at all the Tech games, unaware of his health problems.
Dave is now with his LL all-star teammate Mike Pelly and coaches Wayne Townsend and Ted Bury.
But more important than losing Dave for our games of baseball and softball, we will miss him most as being a kind and warm friend.
We've all lost a great one!

To Dave's Family,
I am heartsick at learining of Dave's passing. I met him when we were all going to Montana Tech. People have described him as being the nicest guy and he truly was! When anyone saw Cheri and Dave together, it was so obvious that they adored each other. I hadn't seen him for many years and he made a point to come over and say hi. I am sure he didn't remember my name, but he remembered me. That was Dave! We caught up on the family he was so proud of! I ran into him again years later and same scenario. This time he proudly told me that he was about to become a grandfather. He was beaming! I am sorry to hear how sick he was. He did not deserve that. I am sorry for all of the pain all of you had to endure. But you were all so lucky! I am sure God broke the mold on him! I sincerely hope that the goodness and love that Dave gave will comfort you during your difficult days!
God! Please give Dave and this family the peace that so rightly deserve!

Frank, Rae Cheri, and Brenda, I was so touched by all the wonderful notes about Dave. I knew Dave since the first grade and spent most of my early childhood with the Meier Family. Dave and I " skined our knees together". I can honestly say there was never a nice kinder more considerate person than Dave Meier. It is my good fortune to have grown up across the street from such a wonderful person and friend. My heart aches with all of your's.
