John Laughlin Obituary

John Michael Laughlin

July 15, 1962 - June 20, 2025

John Michael "Paco" Laughlin passed away on Friday, June 20, 2025, at his home in Buckeye, Ariz., at the age of 62. Born on July 15, 1962, to Robert and Margaret Laughlin, John grew up in Montana alongside his sister Robin and younger brother Donald. He graduated from Anaconda High School in 1980, where he was active in baseball, football, bowling, and track. He went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University. John began his career in Southern California, launching a distinguished 37-year tenure in the aerospace industry. His work began with testing fuel systems for the B-1B bomber and expanded to include significant contributions to projects such as the X-31 Demonstrator, Space Shuttle, B-2 Spirit Bomber, RQ-3 Darkstar UAV, X-35 Fighter, F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning II, B-21 Raider, C-130J, and numerous classified programs. His technical expertise and dedication to national defense earned him deep respect within the aerospace community.

After retiring to Buckeye in May 2022, John enjoyed a slower pace of life filled with time spent with friends and riding his Harley Davidson. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and MSU Bobcats, he especially cherished returning to Bozeman for football games and tailgating with lifelong friends. John is remembered for his sharp wit, storytelling, and unwavering loyalty. He leaves behind a legacy of intelligence, generosity, and enduring friendship. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Donald; and grandparents Coleman and Irma Laughlin and Louis and Katherine Porchervina. He is survived by his sister Robin; and brother-in-law Jim Mantell; nieces Miranda (Keith) Gallagher, Kailee (Kevin) Fabatz, and Ali (Caleb) DesJarlais; as well as several great nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I learned of Paco's passing today. He always had well-intended words of wisdom to share. I learned a lot from him coming into my role at Northrop that helped me grow my expertise and confidence.

I still can´t believe this. Paco was great guy and friend. When Paco was around you were having a good time. He will be missed by all.
It is most important to remember him so his spirit lives on. Every time I talk about Anaconda, the Cats, and Notre Dame I will think of him. Ever time a military jet
flies over head I will say a little prayer for him.
With deepest sympathy,
Joe Melvin
