Joseph Hugo Obituary

On March 17, 2026, Irish whiskey was served in heaven as God welcomed Joe Hugo home. Joe passed away peacefully in Pinedale, Wyoming, surrounded by friends and family in the community he loved so deeply-and who loved him in return.

Joe will be remembered for his unique personality, quick wit, and the unmistakable quirks that made him one of a kind. He had a gift for brightening any room and bringing smiles to those around him. Whether it was buying the first round, greeting someone with a nickname he had crafted just for them, or sharing one of his well-timed "Hugoisms" about how the world worked, Joe left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Joe was born on March 12, 1945, in Anaconda, Montana, to Joe and Ann Hugo. His father immigrated to the United States at the age of nine, just before the outbreak of World War I, and his mother was a first-generation American of Irish descent.

He was educated in the Catholic school system and graduated from Butte Central High School. He went on to attend Montana Tech, earning a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1970. Joe began his career with Atlantic Richfield in Casper, Wyoming, and later worked for Husky Oil and Gas in Cody, Wyoming. In 1980, he made Pinedale his home, working for Christman Energy Corporation before becoming an independent consultant. His work took him to many corners of the world, with stories-some highlights, some lowlights-from places like Russia, Colombia, and all across the United States.

Joe is survived by his son, Fritz Hugo (DaLyn) of Gillette, Wyoming; his grandchildren, Laney and Bridger Hugo; his sister, JoAnn Barkell of Butte, Montana; and his brother, Karl (Leslie) Hugo of Rigby, Idaho, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered as a father figure to Billy Gransden and Andy Lunemann and their families. The people of Pinedale were also family to Joe, as he held a deep and genuine love for his community.

A celebration of life will be held in Pinedale at a later date, at a fitting venue where friends and family can gather to share an Irish whisky and the many "Hugoisms" that brought laughter and light to so many.

He will be truly missed.
