Laurie Rossberg Obituary

Laurie Margaret Rossberg

"Butte America" has lost one of its finest educators this past week. Laurie Rossberg lost her long and courageous battle with cancer. She was beloved by her students and respected and enjoyed by her colleagues. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Laurie Margaret Sullivan was born on October 20, 1959, to Patricia M. and David T. Sullivan.

Laurie quickly displayed a very friendly and outgoing personality. She had more friends than anyone in the neighborhood. Growing up, she fancied herself as the family's hairdresser. She had long blonde straight hair and one day decided to cut it. She simply chopped off her bangs. Her mother was horrified. Thus the end of her "hair-cutting" career!

Think of the word teacher and Laurie comes to mind. She dreamed of teaching from an early age. When the new St. John's School was built, her dad was able to acquire chalkboards, real school desks, bookcases and set up half of the basement as a "real" classroom. Laurie immediately took to playing teacher. Every chance she got, she "rounded up" neighborhood kids to be her students. She spent hours preparing and presenting school work. All the neighborhood kids developed a wealth of knowledge which put them way ahead of other students their age. Thus, Laurie began her "amateur" teaching career and later received her bachelor and master's degrees from Western Montana College.

Soon afterward, Laurie met and married Gerry Rossberg on August 8, 1991, and together they happily enjoyed 34 years together living in Butte and spending summers at Flathead Lake.

For forty years, Laurie taught and coached both students in Montana as well as in California. She taught at West Junior High in Butte and at Pinecrest-Northridge in California before spending the next thirty-two years teaching at East Middle School.

In addition to teaching, Laurie was a volleyball and cross country coach both at East and at Butte High School. She was the girls' intramural activities director, Student Council advisor and Team E's Team Leader for many years.

Laurie was continually recognized for her excellence in teaching and two of the awards that meant a great deal to her were the Gold Star Award and the University of Montana's Mary Francis Shreeve Award for Excellence in Education.

It seems like anywhere a person might go in Butte, or in other cities, former students would call out, "Hey, Mrs. Rossberg, I still remember all my prepositions!"

Laurie is survived by her husband, Gerry Rossberg; daughter, Lizzie (Carolyn) Munday; her grandchildren, Banyan and Rustyn; stepchildren, Jeremy (Dawne) Rossberg, Shay (Emily) Rossberg, Cejay (Eric) Paulsen; and sister-in-law, Kathy Rossberg. Her siblings include Mary Pat LaForest, Dave (Chris) Sullivan, Julie (Dan) Kirkpatrick and Colleen (Paul) Horsley. Also, numerous nieces and nephews SHE brainwashed into calling her "Pretty Aunt Laurie". The world won't be the same without "Laurie" in it. We will all miss her Irish humor and her quick wit.

Funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 12, 2025, at St. Patrick's Church, Butte, Mont. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by Catholic Mass at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at 12 p.m., Mountain View Cemetery with a reception lunch at 1 p.m. at The Depot

Donations may be made in Laurie's name to the Butte Education Foundation, P.O. Box 3821, Butte, MT 59702, or a charity of your choice.

Miss Sullivan was my teacher for Reading/Language Arts at West Junior High in 1984-85. Such a fun teacher! I think I had a 7th grade crush on her, but that wasn't the only reason it was my favorite class! Engaging discussions, memorable stories (how her mother caught shoplifters at Henessey's), and weird/fun activities (writing epitaphs). But the most beautiful memory of that year was her loving empathy for a member of our class who was called out into the hall to learn that her mother had died. She helped a bunch of 12 year olds learn that it's okay to stop what you're doing, to cry, to pray if you pray and have a quiet moment. I hope all who grieve her death now can take her advice from so many years ago.

Mrs Rossberg (who later let me call her Laurie) was the person that taught me what it means to be a leader, teacher, and mentor. All things I have brought into me current work as an educator. Maybe most importantly, she instilled me a love of running. I was unable to make the service today but was honoring her legacy as I ran a 21k run in Big Sky. And I couldn´t forget my "Irish Luck". To Gerry who hardly said a word but always opened his home, Stephanie K and all the other family and friends that will miss her dearly... my heart aches for you and hope you find ways to celebrate her and remember the incredible person that she was.

I don't know that there was ever one who didn't know Laurie in some way or another...a teacher, a friend, a classmate.

She had such a sense of humor, taught so well, her laughter will echo, linger on. Will all miss her.

She fought a courageous battle, she has admiration from many. Fond memories and our sincere sympathy to all her family

Laurie and Gerry lived behind my parents home and that is where I first got to know her. I worked with her at East for several years and she was so bubbly, friendly and a fabulous English teacher, in fact, I once told her I wish she had been my English teacher when I was growing up. She had such a unique way of teaching that she immediately had everyone’s attention which is a rarity in middle school! The world lost a beautiful lady and she will be so missed. Love you Laurie, you were a true friend not only to me, but to everyone who had the privilege of knowing you.

Laurie and I were grade school friends and we always walked home together. Often when we were young girls, I would go to her house and her dear mother always had homemade cookies for us. We also went to Montana Tech College for a short time together. Recently Laurie and I reconnected. She wrote me a beautiful letter where she expressed how my special brother Ricky made an impact on her teaching. Sending my sincere condolences to her dear family. She was an amazing person and will be forever missed.

I am heartbroken to hear that. Laurie has passed away. The loss is most definitely ours! Laurie was instrumental in my sales career when I returned to Butte in the early ‘90’s. I certainly would’ve starved without her!

I was touched and honored to be a small part of Laurie’s final chapter. It was so heart-warming to be with her, friends, family, and her resolute spirit. As we departed, we cast love and safe travels, wherever they were to lead.

The joy shared by her family and many lifelong friends gave her the proper send-off, surrounded by love and a life of cherished memories. Thank you, Laurie and Gerry, what a team.

This such a loss, I talked to her in May when the group from Ireland were visiting and thought she had beaten this. She was in her element with all the Irish. Laurie – When I think of you, the words that come to mind are: Teacher, Coach, Friend, Cousin—Fun & Authentic. I was fortunate enough to experience all of the above.

Teachers and coaches like you shape lives far beyond the classroom or the court. You had a way of making your students and athletes feel seen, encouraged, and capable of more than they believed. Your kindness, energy, and fun spirit touched so many, and the impact you made will always be remembered by everyone fortunate enough to have been taught, coached, or simply known by you.

It’s sad to know you’re no longer here, but there’s peace in knowing you’re not suffering. May you rest in love and light, Laurie.

ah, who am I kidding—you’d probably roll your eyes at something that serious . So here’s to you: raising a glass, a helluva good time, and keeping the good times going wherever you are

Jerry and family, my heart breaks for you. I hope you find peace & comfort in the wonderful memories of Laurie.
