Chester McKillip Obituary

Chester William McKillip

September 19, 1932-November 26, 2023

Chester William McKillip, a man of unwavering faith, unyielding dedication, and endless storytelling, left this world on November 26, 2023. Born to John and Helena McKillip on September 19, 1932, in Muscatine, IA, Chester's (Chet's) life was a testament to resilience, service, and familial devotion.

Chet's journey began in the embrace of a large and loving family. Born amidst the Great Depression, he learned the values of hard work and frugalness from his parents and siblings. Chet's siblings, Velma, Anna, Esther, Clifford, Bernice, Clarence, John, and Wilbur, paved the way for a life rooted in strong family ties and a deep passion for genealogy.

At the tender age of 19, Chet was drafted into the United States Army, serving his country with distinction during the Korean War. Displaying exceptional bravery, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and found himself stationed on the front lines as the war drew to a close. His service was marked by a profound sense of duty and sacrifice.

Following his military tenure, Chet started a career as an engineer with Stanley Consultants in 1954. Dedicated to his work, he achieved professional excellence and retired in 1989, leaving a legacy of commitment and competence. Retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter for Chet as he transitioned into full-time farming, a pursuit that reflected his innate connection to the land.

A self-educated farmer, Chet owned several farms in the Muscatine County area. His agricultural endeavors were a testament to his tenacity and passion for nurturing the earth. Chet's commitment to farming was not merely a profession but a way of life, exemplifying his deep respect for the land and its bounty.

Chet's spiritual compass led him to Calvary Church, where he felt connection to the community. A devout Christian, he attended services whenever possible, finding strength and inspiration in his faith.

Throughout his life, Chet found love and companionship in three marriages. His first union with Marcella Noret blessed them with a child, Lori, followed by a marriage to Joy Viner, where he adopted her two children, Scott and Natalie. In his final and enduring marriage to Judy Smith, Chet found a lifelong partner with whom to shared the company of two her to sons, Barry and Jamie, along with the joys and challenges of the golden years.

Chester McKillip was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helena, his first wife Marcella, and second wife Joy. He also joined his siblings Velma, Anna, Esther, Clifford, Bernice, Clarence, John, and Wilbur in eternal rest.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, and his children, Lori Petrik, Scott McKillip, Natalie Harden; two stepsons, Barry Noret, Jamie Noret, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Chester's legacy extends beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of countless nephews and nieces who were inspired by his wisdom and kindness.
