Michael Stark Obituary

Michael Lee Stark II, known lovingly as Lee, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington. He was 44. He had a long, courageous battle with colorectal cancer. He was a proud father and devoted husband taken too soon. Lee was born in Kirksville, Missouri on April 20, 1981, to Mike and Terri Stark. He grew up in Sydney, Ohio and graduated high school in 1999. He settled in the pacific northwest in 2016 and was proud to call Bellingham home. Lee's life was marked by a relentless drive, a curious mind, love for speed and innovation. As both driver and team owner of Stark Auto Racing, Lee competed in over 200 events in winged and non-winged sprint cars. He gained extensive knowledge and experience that he carried with him for life. Eventually, Lee traded in his fire suit for textbooks and returned to school with the same dedication he brought to the track. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis-an achievement that launched the second chapter of his remarkable career. Lee dedicated most of his professional career to Cummins Inc., ultimately achieving the roles of Chief Engineer and Tech Strategy Director. His significant contributions include the innovative design and development of a next-generation engine brake, a breakthrough that will continue to enhance the performance and safety standards of heavy-duty vehicles for years to come. Additionally, Lee holds 11 patents across three continents, and most recently focused on advancing powertrain development through the strategic implementation of artificial intelligence. As a visionary leader, Lee consistently challenged conventional thinking, encouraged curiosity, and propelled technological advancements while remaining firmly grounded. He inspired his team members, fostering confidence and nurturing their growth into independent, effective leaders. Beyond his professional and racing accomplishments, Lee was a true outdoorsman who found joy and peace in nature. He loved snowboarding, mountain biking, and hiking, and cherished every moment spent adventuring with his family. He leaves behind family, friends, and colleagues who will miss his sharp wit, fearless ambition, and warrior spirit. He is survived by his wife Elisha; his son Jack; his father Mike Stark (Susan); his mother Terri Stark; his brother Kyle Stark (Stephanie) his niece Izzy and nephew Tommy; and chosen family who carry his memory forward with love. A celebration of Lee's life will be held in the coming 6 months to a year.
