Sharon Smith Obituary

Sharon L. Smith was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She passed away peacefully at home in Bellingham, Washington on April 12, 2025. Sharon was born on December 14, 1947, to Joe and Betty Smith in the Territory of Alaska and grew up in Juneau where her grandparents owned and operated the Juneau Dairy farm. She was a third generation Juneauite who enjoyed the outdoors, travel, yoga, family and companions, and in her later years, becoming a grandmother. Sharon moved to Bellingham where she attended and graduated from Western Washington University in 1986 with a BA in Special Education and in 1988 with a Master of Special Education. She taught in the Bellingham School District until her retirement. As a teacher, Sharon shared her passion for mathematics and literature, providing enrichment for the students and young people in her life. She was the third in succession of seven children born to the Joe Smith Family and is survived by all her brothers and sisters: Gail, Chris, Joe, Tim, Julia and Becky, plus uncle Sidney Smith (Elizabeth) and many cousins. She is also survived by her daughter Heidi Wahto (Michael Manwaring) and her beloved granddaughter Claire Wahto Manwaring in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Sharon would like to recognize the staff at Peace Health Cardiology in Bellingham as well as Virginia Mason Cardiology in Seattle. She would also like to recognize Ione, Erik and Abigail for their loving care and support during the past many months. Sharon has requested that donations be made to the animal rescue organization of your choice.

Sharon was one of the best teachers at Columbia Elementary School, as a parent, I was so lucky that both of my kids ended up being in her classroom. May her sweet memory be a blessing. My heart goes out to her daughter and the rest of her family, friends, and community.

Sharon and a I met in a yin yoga class we often attended at 3 OMS Yoga studio here in Bellingham about 10 years ago. Her love of yoga and her dedication to practicing was inspiring, especially in the early months following a surgery that did not mend her heart condition. As I witnessed her courageous engagement in Life over the months of 2024, I often heard Sharon speak with great tenderness and love of her grand daughter. She was intent on having as much time with Claire as she possibly could. I miss my friend, and think of her often.
