James Robert Vaughn, Jr.

Sergeant Major James Robert Vaughn, Jr. (Retired), age 72 of Fort Washington, MD, departed this life on November 22, 2013.

James, the son of Maggie Florence Vaughn and the late James Robert Vaughn, was born on April 13, 1941 in Murfreesboro, TN. He was a graduate of Holloway High School and joined the Army in 1964. James proudly served his country for 30 years. After retiring from the United States Army, he diligently worked for the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 15 years. At the time of his death, he was an advocate and supporter for veterans as a National Veteran Appeals Officer for the Non Commissioned Officers Association of the United States of America (NCOA).

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved mother, Maggie Florence Vaughn of Murfreesboro, TN; his loving wife, Dorothy Odiestine Vaughn of Fort Washington, MD, who he married on March 16, 1968; two devoted daughters, Jamise Harper of Fort Washington, MD and JaMiko Sapp of Windermere, FL; four grandchildren, Alexis Harper and Alvin Harper, Jr. of Fort Washington, MD, and Mercedes Sapp and Warren Sapp II of Windermere, FL; and a host of family and friends.

Sergeant Major Vaughn (Retired) will lie in state on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Rucker Memorial Chapel, Inc., 1505 Bradyville Pike, Murfreesboro, TN 37130 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, 738 East Castle Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37130 on Saturday, November 30, 2013. Viewing 10 a.m., and funeral service to begin at 11 a.m. Reverend Keith Mayes will be the eulogist and Reverend James McCarrrol will officiate. Interment immediately following the service at Evergreen Cemetery, 519 Greenland Drive, Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

Services have been entrusted to Rucker Memorial Chapel, (615) 895-2200.

It was a blessing meeting Jim while working at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Board of Veterans Appeals. He was always so helpful and pleasant when I needed information regarding a case.
