Mr. Battend was of the most influential teachers of my young adult life. He made a strong impression on me, which I ultimately went on to hold as the gold-standard relationship between educator and student. He had a keen eye for the potential of each of his students, and expected no less than our best every day. He could be hysterically funny too, and served as a role model for me at a critical time in my development. For my senior year Christian Service I was chosen to help assist him with his teaching responsibilities. We sat together in the library on many afternoonsgrading papers, talking about my college plans, occasionally my adolescent anxieties and he listened and advised me with a sense of wisdom and practicality that I still remember to this day. I confess I felt so proud to have earned some of his trust and respect, and having measured up to his discerning judgement of character. I still think of the lessons he taught me over 15 years ago, and I will miss the man deeply. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and friends.

You definitely impacted my life and taught me a lot of lessons in high school. You brought yourself down to our level so we felt safe with you but yet demanded the respect that you deserved. It was an honor to know you. May you rest in eternal peace. You and your family are in my prayers

Mr. Battend used to coach me in softball at SJV. He was an excellent coach and teacher. I learned so much from him on and off the field. His high expectations made me a better person all around. He was a great man. R.i.p.

Mr. Battend left such an impact on every student who took any of his classes. Besides educating all of his students in history, government and the law, Mr. Battend also dedicated a large portion of his class time for teaching us all practical knowledge, everyday life lessons, day-to-day tips that only a guy like Mr.Battend experienced over a lifetime -- And all the while, he respected his students like no other teacher I've ever had. Since graduating, I've often thought about Mr. Battend and the things he taught us in class. I was so lucky to have had the honor of being taught, but more accurately, mentored by him. He was such an amazing person. I send my deepest condolences to his family. Your father was a great man, one of a kind.
