Carteret - We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear Father, Anthony F. Sarzillo, 92. Tony or "Sazi", known by many of his old friends, was born and raised in Carteret, NJ. Tony was the son of Joseph Edward Sarzillo and Blanche Frances Balewicz Sarzillo. The love of his life, his wife & mother of his three children, Rose Marie Beam Sarzillo passed in 1980 at the age of 43. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Sarzillo of Seattle, WA and his sister Dorothy Blanche Sarzillo O'Connell Patrizio.

Tony is survived by his three children, Ann Marie Sarzillo Phillips and her husband Sherwood of Brick, NJ; Alice Sarzillo Machos and her husband Henry of Brick NJ; and his son Joseph Edward Sarzillo of Carteret, NJ. Also survived by grandchildren, Robert Anthony Phillips and his spouse Jacqueline Caravella, Joseph Michael Phillips, and grandaughter Toni Machos Suarez and her spouse Joel of Brick NJ. Also survived by his great-granddaughters, Avery Rose Phillips and Rayn Suarez.

Anthony served proudly in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

Tony was an avid athlete at Carteret High school & lettered in baseball, football, basketball, & track.

He was a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees farm teams in Butler, Pennsylvania and LaGrange, Georgia in the 1940's.

Tony was a referee for the Carteret Senior League Basketball teams and was an avid golfer. He continued to play baseball locally for many years.

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Carey Council 1280, in Carteret and served as the Grand Knight. He was also active in and a founding member of the Carteret Sportsmen Association.

Tony was a mail carrier, a supervisor, and the Assistant Post Master in the Carteret Post Office. Tony held the position of Officer in Charge at the Westfield, NJ Post Office. He retired as Postmaster of the Cranford, NJ Post Office after serving 43 years for the US Postal Service.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at the Rumpf Funeral Home, 21 Locust Street, Carteret. We will meet at the funeral home at 9:00 AM and begin leaving at 9:30 for a 10:00 AM Mass at St. Joseph Church in Carteret. Interment to follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. Visitation will be Monday 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
