Audrey Jones Obituary

Audrey Yvonne Jones

Monmouth Junction - Jones, Audrey-78, of Monmouth Junction, NJ, an accomplished musician and longtime elementary school music teacher in North Brunswick, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Aug. 20, 2021. The third oldest of eight children, Audrey was born in Atlantic City on July 3, 1943 to the late Thomas F. and Lillian M. Jones. It was not long before the family relocated to Pleasantville, where Audrey attended the city's public schools. She took private piano lessons, quickly becoming proficient in musical styles ranging from classical to gospel. Upon graduating from Pleasantville High School in 1961, she entered Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), majoring in music. Her skill level and repertoire of songs grew rapidly and Audrey was a featured pianist in many concerts, including one she gave in the U.S. Virgin Islands after winning a regional contest. She began her teaching career at Chelsea Junior High School in Atlantic City after graduating from Glassboro with a bachelor's degree in music. Eventually, she relocated to North Jersey, joining the North Brunswick School District as an elementary music teacher. Audrey derived great joy and satisfaction from her profession. Over her 40-year plus career, it was not unusual for her to end up teaching three generations from the same family. When "Ms. Jones" finally retired on Sept. 1, 2014, the North Brunswick Board of Education accepted her letter of retirement "with regret." While she taught music, Audrey for many years was simultaneously serving as a musician and choir director for several church congregations, including those located in cities including Plainfield and Scotch Plains. Audrey also loved to travel and her summer breaks customarily included a cruise. One of her most memorable trips was a cruise she took with her mother and sister, Mercedes, to Mexico, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Audrey was blessed with a beautiful Soprano singing voice and a bubbly personality. She was never one to shy away from sharing her opinion and displayed a good sense of humor that she took pleasure in showcasing at the Jones family gatherings. Even as her health declined, Audrey's faith in God never wavered. She always had a hymn or another spiritual song to share with family members during phone calls or visits. And her music still brought joy to others, including at the Assisted Living facility where she last resided.Left to cherish her memory are four brothers, Thomas (Gloria) of Cleveland, OH; Dennis of Somers Point, Kenneth (Delores) of Egg Harbor Township and Alan Jones (Diana) of El Paso, Tex.; three sisters, Cheryl Harden of New York City; Mercedes (Jerome) Caesar and Angela (Robert) Stewart, all of Egg Harbor Township, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 28th at the Atlantic City Cemetery in Pleasantville, where all who attend are kindly being asked by the family to wear a face covering. Professional services are under the direction of the Serenity Funeral Home, 414 S. Main St. Pleasantville, NJ 08232. (609) 383-9994

I was saddened to learn of Audrey's passing through the Rowan Alumni newsletter. We were classmates at Glassboro State and I'd like to think also friends. I loved listening to her play and when I gave my recital (on clarinet) I knew exactly who I wanted to accompany me on the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. Like so many others, we lost track of each other after graduation as we became involved in our busy lives, she returning to AC and me going off to teach in Edison and attend Rutgers and beyond. Working on the clarinet concerto with her was a mutual learning and cooperation experience that I cherished over the years and never forgot.
Rest in eternal peace, dear Audrey.

Mrs. Jones was an excellent music teacher and a great gift to children and parents of North Brunswick schools. Thank you for serving so well. My children, as adults, are still singing songs she taught them--one of their favorites, "Martin, So Important".

Ms. Jones was my elementary school music teacher. TRUE STORY: I joined the orchestra in the third grade. The day after I joined the teacher died in his sleep. In my third grade ignorance I thought my joining the orchestra contributed to his death. Before I could even get my violin I quit and joined choir. Ms. Jones sparked a love of choral singing that led me to Marj Peterson Mottola, Peggy Sica and my professional career. I´ll never forget my beginning, and hope that her end was peaceful and filled with music. Thank you, Ms. Jones.

Ms Jones- thank you for living. For the carts with the keyboards that kids helped lug around the school. For your Scripto-Whipto. This was the intro to gospel soul and jazz music I didn´t realize I was getting at the time. Sometimes we get lucky in life and cross paths with a soul like this one. God bless and safe smooth passage

Ms. Jones was my music teacher all through elementary school. I remember her just as she looked in this photograph, and loved hearing her bang (beautifully) on the piano and teach us songs. Any time I hear a patriotic song I think of her, because she would teach them to us. My heart is with her family and friends.

The incomparable Miss Jones. A dedicated educator through and through. I still remember some of her songs, quirky sense of humor and deadpan delivery. I am thankful that she was part of my childhood over 40 years ago, and I hope that she is singing some of her creative tunes with the angels. Rest In Peace and thank you for the sweet memories.

Ms. Jones, you were a great music teacher. I remember being in 1st grade at Livingston Park and watching you play so quickly on the keys! That´s when I developed my love to play piano. The dedication you had to make the winter concerts exceptional and it was truly an honor to have you as my teacher. May you forever rest in power. You will truly be missed <3.

Im genuinly deeply saddened by Ms. Jones passing. She was easily one of my favorite teachers! She was SO fun, loud lol and energetic! i loved when she would come rolling her keyboard cart in to class on Tuesdays. I also joined chorus which Ms. Jones was organized and operated. She made sure we all learned them lyrics and were on point ! Me and my sisters loved Ms. Jones and im happy to say she has made some great memories for me !
