Carmine Coppola, 89, of Spotswood, died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Gardens at Monroe Health Center.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Carmine settled in Spotswood in 1988. He served as a corporal in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. Afterwards, he was a third mate in the US Merchant Marine for 35 years before his retirement. He was an avid bocce ball player and a member of the Clearwater Players, a troupe that put on live performances in their community. He was an award winning modeler of ships and other items, which he entered in local 4-H shows. He was also a world traveler, both in his merchant marine days and after his retirement.

Predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice Coppola, his 2nd wife Betty M. Coppola and his siblings, Amando, Orlando, Dominic, Anna and Helen, he is survived by his step-children, Scott Ross and his wife Donna, and Gail Ross, both of Brooklyn, NY, Donna Amendola and her husband Gene of Long Isl., NY, Jill Ross of Florida, Barbara Peck and her husband William of Spotswood, James Simmonds, Jr. and his wife MaryAnn of Monroe Twp. And Timothy Simmonds and his wife Patricia of Piscataway, and; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 AM Wednesday from Spotswood Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Spotswood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Interment will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, East Brunswick. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
