Harold Garrity Obituary

Dr. Harold V. Garrity, Jr.

AGE: 88 • Interlaken

Dr. Harold V. Garrity, Jr., 88, of Interlaken, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011. Born on March 23, 1923, he spent wonderful years in Bradley Beach Grammar School. He graduated Asbury Park High School in 1941 and served as an enlisted man in the US Army during WWII. Dr. Garrity also served as a Captain in the US Air Force Dental Corps during the Korean period stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Air Force Bases in Alabama. His undergraduate work was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Columbia and Georgetown Universities. He graduated from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine in June of 1949. He practiced dentistry with his father Dr. Harold V. Garrity, Sr. in Asbury Park and then moved his practice to Oakhurst from which he retired in 2001.

Dr. Garrity was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Deal, NJ. He married Constance Marie Glynn in 1949 and together they raised five children. He is survived by his son, Harold V. Garrity, III, and his wife, Cathy of Upper Montclair, NJ; his daughter, Kathleen Marie Garrity and her husband, James Shanahan of New York City; his daughter, Maureen Elizabeth Andren and her husband, Karl-Erik of Duxbury, MA; his son, Kevin Robert Garrity and his wife Terri of Cortlandt Manor, NY and his son, Michael Dennis Garrity of Pearl River, NY. Dr. Garrity is also survived by five grandchildren: Harold V Garrity, IV, Kelley Marie Garrity, Philip Daniel Garrity, Elizabeth Fleming Garrity and Kristofer Glynn Andren. His first wife, Constance in 1989, predeceased him. In November 1994, Dr. Garrity married Jean Thomas.

Dr. Garrity spend most of his life with his first wife in Deal, NJ, where he served on the Board of Adjustment for 5 years and then served 24 years as a Commissioner and Deputy Mayor of Deal until his marriage to Jean and subsequent move to Interlaken, NJ where his parents had built a home in 1937. Dr. Garrity was a member of the Deal Golf and Country Club which he joined in 1950 and where he served as President. He also chaired the Senior Advisory Committee and was fortunate to win the Club Championship in 1962. Actually, he was the only one in the last 100 years of the Deal Golf Club to have won the Club Championship and been the President. Dr. Garrity was a member of the Rotary Club of Asbury Park and proudly served as President of that wonderful organization. He felt the Rotary Club set the standard that, if all followed them, would make this world a better, happier place. He served as President of the Medical Arts Corporation, which built the building on the corner of Grand, and Monroe Avenues in Asbury Park. Dr. Garrity was a member of the Allenhurst Beach Club; Deal Casino; Wayside Rod and Gun; Asbury Park Fishing Club and the Belmar Fishing Club. He served on the staff of Jersey Shore University Medical Center for many years. He served as Associate Attending in oral surgery; was President of the 29 Man Dental Staff and represented that department on the Hospital Executive Committee. He was a member for some years of the NJ Seniors Golf Association.

His parents, his first wife, Constance and his second wife, Jean Thomas Garrity, predeceased Dr. Garrity. Dr. Garrity was proud of his family, proud to have served as a dentist and in general, grateful for a happy and healthy life. He used to say in his 87th year that he "picked his parents carefully". Adios
