Herman Berg Obituary

Herman Berg

Dr. Herman Berg, 88, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2020. Herman was born on April 21,1932 in Newark, NJ where he grew up with his parents, Solomon and Irma Berg, and his brothers Harry and Paul. On June 26, 1955, 65 years ago, he married his Weequahic High School sweetheart, Beverly Kreiser.

Herman received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1956. After working as a large animal practitioner in New Hampshire for one year, the happy couple moved to Glen Burnie, MD where he worked for seven years at a small animal practice. During their time in Maryland, the Bergs had two children, Shelley and Stuart. In 1962, Dr. Berg and his father Sol, broke ground on Berg Animal Hospital on Hwy 34 in Matawan, NJ. The family needed a place to live, so it was built half hospital, half house. The Berg family lived there for seven years. Emergency clinics did not yet exist in the area so Dr. Berg was available 24/7 to care for any animals in distress. He also worked with US Customs K9 units for all the New Jersey/New York airports and treated the K9 unit for all of Matawan Police Department. Dr. Berg mentored many doctors and employees who passed through his doors. Dr. Berg provided quality Veterinary care to the Middlesex and Monmouth county area for 54 years and practiced for a total of 61 years. He retired in 2017 as the oldest practicing Veterinarian in the State of NJ at age 85.

Herman was a renaissance man who could fix anything. Whether he was at home, or the hospital, he worked tirelessly to improve the condition of everything around him. He was an avid sportsman and ranked 7th in the nation for the MSU sharpshooters pistol team in 1954. In his free time, Herman enjoyed spending time on Long Beach Island with his family and friends. He loved reading books, traveling, watching WWII movies, doing crossword puzzles, walks in the park with Beverly, and always had a joke on the tip of his tongue. Papa was always in the stands cheering on his grandchildren during sporting and horse-riding events. Herman also won countless awards at antique car shows in his 1941 Cadillac convertible with his son Stuart by his side. But above all other achievements, he was a true patriarch to his family, as a strong and proud gentleman.

Herman was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly and their children Shelley and her husband Harvey, Stuart and his wife Melody. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Dana and husband Eric, Jason and his wife Danielle, Rebecca, Camille and Jake. Also by his adored great grandchildren, Jacob, Henry, and Hannah.

Funeral service will take place 12pm on Wednesday, July 15th at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish chapel funeral home. 2130 Hwy 35, Ocean Township, NJ 07712. Gatherings are limited to 50 persons and masks are required.

It was a pleasure knowing this wonderful man and veterinarian.
He ran a compassionate, loving and knowledgeable veterinary service.
My dog Junior and I both loved him, he saved my boys live once and took care of him for 11 years. They just don´t make them like that anymore. I´ll never forget him.
Hoping that on this memory of the anniversary of his passing, his family and friends are comforted by good memories only.

Very sorry to hear that Dr. Berg passed. I knew him when I was a kid living on Schley Street in Newark, NJ before he went to college. Although he was somewhat older than my brother and me, he was always friendly to us.

Dr. Berg was one of my father in laws close
friends as I know it. He always took amazing compassionate care of the boat yard dogs and cats at Hans Pedersen and Sons Marina as well as all of our family pets. Personally he gave us two dogs that lived beyond
Seventeen years. We are heartbroken to hear the news of his passing. Condolences to his family, staff and friends.
Gary and I alwalys felt like family. We always had long conversations at our visits, and he would even be concerned about our fur babies when we would meet him and his wife at Costco. Dr. Herman Berg was and will be a hero in our hearts.

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Berg's passing.
So many memories of my time spent at Berg Animal Hospital came flooding back.
Dr. Berg was my first mentor after graduating Veterinary school in 1979. He was an incredible veterinarian, kind, compassionate and competent. An amazing surgeon. His guidance was a huge influence on my career.

Even though veterinary medicine was his life, his true love was his family.
He would always remark after a long day that he couldn't wait to go home and cuddle on the sofa with his wife.
Bev and family I am so sorry for your immeasurable loss. But be so proud of the man that he was and the legacy he left.
My deepest sympathy,
Dr. Maureen Stokes Pease

Dr Berg was a great veterinarian who I found to be kind and intelligent. I have been going to Berg Animal Hospital from the 1960s to present. He was always gentle and patient with my cats/kittens. The last cat he treated, who was a senior and blind. I was so appreciative when he would call me to go over the lab results and give me suggestions on the path to take. I trusted him because I witnessed how he gently handled and Treated my cat. Thank you sir, for choosing to be a veterinarian. May you Rest In Peace.

Dr. Berg treated all of my bull terriers except for the one I have now. I began with Dr. Berg when the hospital was stilled called "Lowell Animal Hospital." I'll never forget how he recognized a rare fungal infection in the nasal cavities of my first bull terrier. He saved my dog life. I trusted his advice completely. When I moved to Michigan he helped me find a good veterinary practice near my home. He was the most compassionate and knowledgeable vet I've ever known. I feel his loss across all this time and distance. I will miss him.

I loved speaking with Dr Berg. I loved the peace of mind I had when one of my own was in his care. I loved getting advice from him which wasnt limited to pet care. I loved his enthusiasm in classic cars and especially in his 1941 Cadillac. I loved seeing him unlock the passenger door of their daily Cadillac for his beloved wife, hold her hand as she got in, and then close the door behind her in Holmdel Park. There are many things I have fond memories of and Id like to thank him for them all. Truly one of the greats. God Bless you Doctor Berg.
