Imre Herczeg Obituary
AGE: 78 • Woodbridge
Imre Herczeg passed away peacefully at JFK Medical Center, Edison on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013. He was 78 years old. Imre was born on Nov. 9, 1935 in Szentgotthard, Hungary. He was engaged in the Hungarian revolution of 1956 and came to the United States in 1957, settling down in Perth Amboy, later moving to Woodbridge. He was grateful to his adopted country and very proud to become an American Citizen and participate in the political process. With an extraordinary work ethic, he was employed at Gerber Plumbing, General Motors and Hyatt Bearings. He was active as a Trustee at the Hungarian American Citizens Club of Woodbridge, a Trustee and Holy Name Society member at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, and active parent in the Hungarian Scouting Association in Woodbridge. Imre was an avid gardener and horticulturist. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew this gentle man of faith.

Imre is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years and lifelong sweetheart, Maria (Scheck) Herczeg; his three children, Kathy Lopes and her husband Robert, Imre M. Herczeg and László Herczeg and his fiancée Winnie Lau. He was a devoted grandfather to Thomas, Krissy, James, Alex, Stephen, Erika and Robert. He is also survived by his mother, Katalin Herczeg; brother, László Herczeg and sister, Valerie Kanics, living in Hungary. Imre was blessed and loved by his many cousins, nieces and nephews in Hungary and Canada; as well as his brother-in-law, Frank Scheck; uncle, Imre Mesics and his Godchildren, Cynthia, Marika, János and Márta.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 22nd, at 9:30 am from the Gerity & Chubenko Funeral Home, 411 Amboy Avenue, Woodbridge, followed by a 10:00am Mass of Resurrection at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Woodbridge with entombment at St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge. Visitation will be Thursday, November 21, from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the funeral home. Due to Mausoleum constraints, donations in lieu of flowers can be directed to: St. Anthony of Padua Church, 436 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading, NJ 07064 Attention: Maintenance Fund for Our Lady of Mt. Our heartfelt condolences to the Herczeg család. We have many happy memories that include all of you from our cserkész days...and still smile in knowing that your Strawberry Hills home was once our Horváth family's 1st US home and the 1st one our Lajos nagyapa built in this country. Imrebasci...thank you for being a polite gentleman neighbor with the most beautiful garden in the neighborhood. You helped me when I needed a neighbor..I will never forget you. I was able to thank you and you were so humble and said that is what neighbors do...I will miss you and will think of you when I see a garden.
