(Home News Tribune)

JOHN K. GLEASON
AGE: 63 SOMERSET
John K. Gleason died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at his winter home in Bradenton, Fla., surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness. He was 63.
John was born in Atlantic City and resided in New Brunswick until moving to the Somerset section of Franklin Township in 1971. At this time, he relocated the Gleason Funeral Home from New Brunswick to Somerset.
He was a 1967 graduate of the American Academy McAllister Institute in New York City and became a licensed funeral director in 1969. Mr. Gleason was the owner and operator of the Gleason Funeral Home in Somerset for nearly 40 years. The funeral home was founded by John E. and Kathryn B Gleason, John's parents in 1929, and is currently operated by the third generation of Gleasons.
Mr. Gleason was a longtime communicant of Saint Matthias R.C. Church in Somerset, where he was very active. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, a Eucharistic Minister, and an usher. John was involved in volunteering his time to assist with Bingo night at the church, belonging to the "Bingo One'' team. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Gleason was a member of the Franklin Township Jaycees, Franklin Township Lions Club, Franklin Township Loyal Order of the Moose, and the Ancient Order of the Hibernian. He was inducted as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
John also sat on the Board of Directors of the Franklin Township Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of McCarrick Care Center in Somerset. He served as past president and was a member of the Middlesex-Somerset Funeral Directors Association, and a delegate to the National Funeral Directors Association.
Mr. Gleason was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing and watching all sports. John played softball for the Franklin-Somerset Liquors Softball Team. He also coached C.Y.O basketball for both Sacred Heart School in New Brunswick and Saint Matthias School in Somerset. He was also a member of the Asbury Park Fishing Club. He was an avid N.Y. Giants fan and a founding member of the "Monday Night Football Wrecking Crew.'' He was a Yankee enthusiast. His love for the Yankees dates back to his youth. A highlight of his life was having lunch and many telephone conversations with Whitey Ford, his childhood hero.
This October, he was honored at a dinner dance at Temple Beth El for his many years of service to the community.
His winter home in Florida has provided him with many friends and favorite pastimes as well. He was a member of Waterlefe Golf and River Club in Bradenton. Mr. Gleason also enjoyed spending his summers in Loch Arbour, N.J.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Barbara (Galipo) Gleason of Somerset; his sons, John of Asbury Park and William and his wife Lisa of Somerset, and his daughter, Meghan Gleason Peragine and her husband Kevin Peragine of Hillsborough; his sister, Ann Kerwin and her husband Thomas of Toms River; two grandchildren, Liam Gleason and Kathryn Peragine; cousins Marianne Hinkle of Brookline, Mass., and Robert Hinkle of the Bronx, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at Saint Matthias R.C. Church in Somerset. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway. Mr Gleason will always be remembered when we laid to rest our daughter, Randelena Suzanne, age two in '86. So professional & caring in handling all the arrangements to Ceder Grove.

Please accept our condolences to his family, even at this late date.

Barbara and family,

I'm sad to hear the news, but I know that you all have many happy memories to cherish. My parents, Steve and Regina Lech, always had such a grand time with the St Matthias crowd and Bingo Team One. I can still see them laughing over the Mystery Bus Trips and Christmas Carolling adventures. And my dad always had a story about a special Middlebush Santa visit with your children.
I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to the Gleason family. John treated my Mom and I like gold when my Uncle passed in 1977, and then when my Dad passed in 1986. I remember John being a big baseball fan and raving about then Mets pitcher, Dwight Gooden. I still remember how passionate he was when describing that "sweeping curve" that Gooden used to throw! John was personable, a gentleman, and will be missed.

There were many happy momets in John's life-------- My wife and I were remenber browsing in Flenington Outlets many years ago when we met John in a store where he was engaged happily searching for a certain type of glassware for his diaughter's wedding. Now that his enjoyment of life is gone we pray for his family, his friends and his soul that God be most merciful.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Gleason's passing.

My mother and father, Pauline and J. Francis "Pete" Clark (formerly of New Brunswick) always spoke so highly of the entire Gleason family, and John in particular. My mother passed away in December and my father is now in McCarrick Care Center, so I am offering sincere condolences on behalf of my father and the entire Clark Family.

God be with you in this time of sorrow.

Sincerely,
Thomas M. Clark

Dear Gleason Family, My family has known John almost all our lives. I saw him often as I worked at the Silver Fox Lunceheonette where they often came for breakfast between services. He has taken care of the sad tasks of my family as far back as my grandmother and all else who followed. He was always so professional, but more than that he was a true family friend when we needed him. I will miss seeing his ever friendly face. God bless you all at this sad time. Rest in peace John, we'll miss you. The Higgins Family.....

Dear Barbara & family -
John will be missed greatly. He lived a wonderful life, but showed what he was really made of by the grace and dignity with which he handled his horrible illness. Barbara, you were truly his rock and we admired you greatly for the stamina and determination you displayed. You both were made for each other - two great role models.
The Village just won't be the same anymore.
God bless and you are all in our prayers.

Dearest Barbara,
My heart is filled with sadness. John was such a warm hearted, caring man that I truly admired. My fondest memories will be the many wonderful dinners we shared where John and Larry would talk non stop about fishing. I will miss him. Please remember, I'm just a phone call away.
Love,
Barbara

Dear Barbara and family:

This is a very sad day. How can we say good-bye to such a beautiful man? Of all of our wonderful memories, I will always remember the joy of traveling to Ireland together. He was like a little boy on Christmas morning as he discovered the beauty and the "green" of Ireland.

May you find comfort and peace in the memories of your wonderful life together.

With deep sorrow, love and prayers,
