John Nociolo

AGE: 80 • Whitehouse Station

John Nociolo, age 80, of Whitehouse Station, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Born in New York City, NY, on June 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Erminio and Mary Nociolo. John was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1954 to 1956, mostly in Korea. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Foods and Nutrition from Queens College, Queens, NY. He met Patricia O'Brien while they were working as Dietitians at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and married her on September 10, 1960 at Holy Innocents Church in Brooklyn, NY. John served in several voluntary positions with the Hunterdon Senior Services organization, alternately chairing the Investment, Current Events, Theatre Arts, and the Advisory Committee. Professionally, he worked primarily in the health care industry, mostly as Director of the Dietary Department and as a Registered Dietitian. In addition, he served as a Dietary Consultant to various facilities in New York and New Jersey, and as a part-time instructor at Pratt College. John also worked for a short while with American Airlines' foodservice unit at New York International Airport (since named Kennedy Airport) when it was first opened. He originated and directed a number of symposia regarding nutritional therapy employing experts in various aspects of the health care field (including the President of the New York City Food and Nutrition Council) mostly for the benefit of the local community. In addition, he served as the Chairman of the Meals On Wheels Committee founders for Staten Island, NY and gave a number of speeches promoting the program that eventually became borough wide helping to feed hundreds of recipients who could not provide for themselves. Lastly, highlighting the federal OBRA (Office of Budgetary Reconciliation) program's goals he was featured on the cover article of a national trade magazine for fostering improved healthcare by employing innovative programs toward that end.

John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia; their children and spouses: Lawrence and Eileen Nociolo, Linda and Michael McDonnell, Donald Nociolo, and Barbara and her fiancee Walter Beyer. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Julie, Paula, Matthew, Michael, Kelley, Troy, Sarah, Kira, Mia, Jocelyn, and his sister, Elsie Elkins.

A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway, Whitehouse, NJ 08888. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Annandale, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I am so sorry to hear that my first, and favorite boss has died. Mr. Nociolo was a mentor to so many of us and our careers were shaped by him. He really was the best in the field and a great boss. I was lucky to have worked with him because he was the only reason so many of the staff stayed so long.
Pat, please accept my sympathy.
