John J. Takacs

AGE: 76 • Lakewood, formerly of Sewaren

John J. Takacs passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. He was 76 years old.

Born in Port Reading, he resided in Sewaren for 50 years before moving to Lakewood two years ago.

Mr. Takacs was a graduate of Woodbridge High School and Perth Amboy Vocational and Technical School. He served with the Army Engineer Corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis and worked as a carpenter for twelve years with Carpenters Union Local 65 in Perth Amboy before forming his own business, John Takacs Construction. He was a respected general contractor for 30 years before retiring in 1993. His projects as a contractor included building the Elks Club in Woodbridge and remodeling many local businesses on Main Street in Woodbridge as well as the Port Reading Knights of Columbus.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sherryl Lynn Takacs; and his parents, Minnie and John Takacs.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Renee Cosgrove Takacs; a daughter, Kelly A. Takacs, of Ashland, OR; a son, Michael J. Takacs, of Freehold; a granddaughter, Kayla Lynn Jensen, of Edison; a sister, Vanita Hacku and her husband, Richard, of Sewaren; a sister-in-law, Carol Favor and her husband, Julius, of Roselle Park; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 10:15 a.m. from the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home (www.costello-greiner.com), 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Port Reading. Interment will be in Saint James Cemetery, Hopelawn. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
