Julius Ramsey Obituary

Julius Daniel Ramsey

- - Julius Daniel Ramsey peacefully departed this life at home surrounded by his family and caregivers on October 25, 2018. He was born In River Rouge, Michigan on March 23, 1929. His parents were Julius Daniel Ramsey Sr. and Annabelle Butler Ramsey. He was predeceased by both parents, his two brothers, James "Judge" Ramsey and Albert Ramsey, as well as his first wife, Anna S. Ramsey.

He entered the U.S. Army at the age of seventeen and retired twenty-four years later as a Sergeant (E-9).

During his tour of duty, he was assigned to the Adjunct-General's Marching Jazz Band. Julius was a skilled musician in all of the reed instruments but he loved the saxophone best. The Army recognized him with the Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Medal, WW II Victory Medal, World War II Occupation Medal and the National Defense Medal.

While in the Army, Julius completed high school requirements and received accreditation in French and Italian languages. Additionally, after serving fifteen years in Germany, he also spoke fluent German. Upon completion of his Army career he graduated from Brookdale Community College and Rutgers University, majoring in psychology. He had a great strength in mathematics.

Julius began working for the State of New Jersey after his Army career ended. He started in the warehouse and worked his way into a supervisory position for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He covered nine offices in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and put more blind people to work than any other previous supervisor.

After his retirement he became active with the NAACP. His NAACP community work started in the Red Bank Chapter as First Vice President. After he moved to Freehold Township, he started a local chapter and became its founding President. He worked in that capacity for over twenty years.

Julius was an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Freehold and the Fort Monmouth Chapel until his health declined.

He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Janice G. Sweeney, several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.

My husband, John, now also dead, and I both loved Jules since we met him on the Monmouth County Human Relations Commission and later as president of my Freehold branch of the NAACP. We enjoyed interacting with this warm, hsndsome man who was involved with social justice . We liked to hear his stories of his army days and the racial history of Monmouth County. We had not seen him lately due to his illness, but when I saw his obituary photo with the same warm smiling eyes I felt as if he were about to step off the page and once again share some humor. After sharing his sorrow earlier when his first wife died, we were so happy when he and Janice G. Sweeney, also in the MCHRC, became closer and closer , until he told us, "I'm going to ask Jan to marry me!" She took very good care of him and they had some years of happiness. I hope that he and John are still visiting together with affection. I wish dear Janice happy memories. Jules and Jan you are in my heart!
