Mark Sobel Obituary
AGE: 17 • Middletown
Mark Sobel, Jr., died Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from complications of acute myocarditis. He is predeceased by his maternal great-grandparents, Grace and Luigi Scarsella and Philomena and Fabio Massaro; paternal great-grandparents, Lillian and Robert Reynolds, Ida and Seymour Sobel; step-grandfather, William R. Brown; and his uncle, John J. Richards.
He is survived by his heart-broken family, parents, Dr. Mark and Mary Grace Sobel; his brother, Jay Michael Sobel; and his sister, Grace Ann Sobel; his paternal grandmother, Jane Brown; and paternal grandfather, Murray Sobel and wife Mary Sobel; his maternal grandparents, Mario and Connie Massaro of Ohio. Aunts and Uncles include Scott Sobel, Lee Sobel, Jay Sobel, Mario L. Massaro and Dr. Dean and Beth Massaro, David and Doreen Riser and Phyllis Richards. He is also survived by eight loving cousins, Phillips and Michael Richards, David, Daniel and Deanna Riser, Lia Massaro and Marissa Sobel.
Mark was about to enter his senior year at Middletown High School North. He was involved with the Kiwanis Youth Service Organization-Key Club, Science League-Chem Team and Junior Class Council. He was an honor student and was planning to attend the University of Miami as a Pre-Med major, following in his father's footsteps as a physician. He was a linebacker for the MHSN JV football team his sophomore year. He also had a love for health and fitness and was an avid body builder planning to compete in early August. He also enjoyed the beach, skim boarding, jet skiing, wakeboarding, watching movies, computer technology and daily weight lifting at his favorite gym Retro Fitness in Middletown. His summer activities included lifeguarding at the Surfrider Beach Club, Sea Bright and was currently employed as a busboy at the Salt Creek Grill, Rumson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mark Sobel Jr. Scholarship Fund at Middletown High School North for a deserving graduating Senior. Please mail your check to P.O. Box 8097, Red Bank, NJ 07701. It was the wish of Mark Sobel Jr. to donate his vital organs to the Gift of Life Donor Program. As a result, one of his kidneys lives on in a friend of his father, a former University of Maryland football player alumni.
Visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 22 at Holy Cross Church, 30 Ward Ave., Rumson. Interment will follow at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.

It breaks my heart to see yet another family lose someone. I was a trainer at Retro Fitness Middletown until June 29th when my husband died. I knew Mark and he always put a smile on everyones face. Mark and I went to elementary school together, and shared the same group of friends. I've known him since first grade, he was in my class. He was the nicest kid, always making everyone laugh. I remember him having this sort of Chrismassy party or something of the sort one time when we were younger. We both moved away around the same time and gradually lost touch. But I remember one day in 7th grade he invited Chels and I to come over to his new house. We met his little sister Gracie who was the cutest thing and Mark adored her. I remember Graice tagging along as Mark showed us the house and the dock. It's a shame that we all lost contact with one another and I cannot express with words how sorry I am for your loss. Mark was a great friend.

I was so sorry to hear about Mark's passing. I never had a chance to meet him, but I thought you might like to know that a day we spent with Jay a very long time ago has become an indelible family memory.
We had just finished the sledding hill in our yard when we got a huge snowfall. The house was full of boys, friends of both Connor and Liam. Jay never left the hill, until it was too dark to see anything but the snow. When my husband Ed hooked up a floodlight outside, Jay could not contain his excitement. 'THERE'S A LIGHT!! THERE'S A LIGHT!!" he yelled as he bundled himself up again and ran out with his sled.
It's been a long time since I've seen Jay, or any of you, but thanks to the unbridled enthusiasm of a young boy, I think of your family often, and always fondly. I am so sorry you lost your son Mark, but I know he will always be with you.
