Melvin Hardgrove

AGE: 77 • Piscataway

Melvin Hardgrove, 77, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville. He was born April 9, 1937 in New Brunswick to Ellis and Elsie Blaine Hardgrove. He was raised in Dunellen and has lived in Piscataway since 1967. Melvin worked in the maintenance department for Somerset Bus Company, later N.J. Transit Co., for more than 36 years, until his retirement in 2001. During that time he also worked part-time as a school bus driver for several companies. He was a member of Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 819, Newark. He attended Christ United Methodist Church, Piscataway, for many years and devoted many hours to landscaping the church grounds. Melvin served in the U.S. Navy, Naval Air Corps., from 1957 to 1960. He had a passion for aviation, enjoyed taking long walks, and received awards from the township for cleaning up litter.

He was the brother of the late Ellis and Harold Hardgrove, Virginia Bylicki and Barbara Bachmann. His family includes his wife, Ruth L. Adams Hardgrove, whom he married Jan. 11, 1958; his three sons, James R. Hardgrove of Kenneth City, FL, Timothy A. Hardgrove of Troy, NY, and David H. Hardgrove and his wife Loretta of Piscataway; his grandchildren, Marissa, David, and Joseph Hardgrove; his brothers, Robert of Dunellen, John and his wife, Ann Marie of Green Brook, Clifford and his wife Claire of Piscataway, and Roy of Piscataway; and many nieces and nephews.

Services and cremation will be held privately. Friends may visit the family on Monday, July 7, 2014, from 2 to 4 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. at The Mundy Funeral Home, 142 Dunellen Ave., Dunellen.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 485 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854.
